Disco 1 Best jack for a discovery 1

I use a trolley jack but I don't have any peeps in the back. I also have the genuine one which is also very good. Not the first time its sank into soft tarmac on a hot day or soft ground, so I have keep a piece of timber to place underneath them. ;)
Like you I only rarely have peeps in the back, and then I just tell them to put their feet on the small trolley jack that is there! Soft tarmac, mud etc is the nightmare of all recoveries. Which is why when doing MSA recovery we always carried a small trolley jack when we needed to lift a vehicle sufficiently to get a chain or strap round a decently strong suspension part, to effect a recovery. Happened when the "recovery point" was made of tissue paper.

I use 4 ramps at the house to get it up higher but my disco is lifted im not sure if the ramps would fin under a standard one??
saves a lot of time jacking the motor up....pic of my defender getting a wash :D
So a before and an after the wash pic :)
I have some ramps but the disco doesn't like them and just pushes them along when reversing up to them, Ive only tried it once and gave up.
I would sell them, but those who get under vehicles for a hobby already have them, and nowadays with modern cars theres very few that have a need too. So now standing up at the back of the garage, Ive has them a long while they are over 40 years old and from the days when steel was cheap so they are heavy.

I’ve bought the above discovery jack kit! After all the good comments on the standard jack !
Quite right too. :)
The jack is a pocket rocket but DO make sure it has enough oil in it. Look for a painted over plastic plug about 2/3 of the way up, prise it out and fill with hydraulic oil until it dribbles out. replace the plug. Jack it right up then back down again a couple of times to eliminate air locks, then recheck. And store it upright!! :)
If the plastic bit has a few tabs broken off the end, you can simply put a socket over the removable locking wheel nut and wiggle it sideways a bit until it lifts off, or use a screwdriver carefully, although you risk scratching your alloys with that, if you have them. Water pump pliers will do too.
The chocks are a cool gadget. Just don't drive off and forget them! Fits nicely in the back door pocket don't it?:) (Cept the jack of course!) Do you know where that goes, under the bonnet and have you found the single chock that should be there? (Both go together):).

I'm pretty sue I have identical ramps to those and yes the standard height Disco 2 will drive onto them. But I am never brave enough to drive onto them, having once had an annoying episode with a pair with a totally different vehicle.:(. Hat off to you if you drove your truck with its huge tyres onto those tiny ramps! I'd have to jack up each axle in turn and place them under!:(

Like you I have had mine since 1981 and I reckon I have used them about 5 or 10 times, and then by jacking the car up first!

Never had one leak on any of the D2s we have had, when stored in the correct position , then it is OK.

Then you were just lucky I guess, or I was unlucky. Twas stored absolutely correctly, the space is so small you cannot put it in the wrong position, but I would not have remarked on it if it hadn't happend to me, and to others I have read making the same comment. Perhaps just a small percentage.
Now I carry a trolley jack maybe I'll put it back under the bonnet.
By the way, the ones who were also complaining of this wanted to know where they could get a new seal. Do you know this? As I wouldn't mind changing it on mine, if I could work out how to get to it!

Never, has to be truly bad before I will get the manual out!

Haha likewise but just last week I had to refer to the dreaded instruction for our new garden furniture...
opened the big box & had all the parts spread out over the patio looking at it for a few mins as I had brain freeze
wondering wtf is going on here looked at the manual although I made sure there was no one watching me lol
then discovered there should be another box o_O
We go half 2 chairs half a table & have a bench seat with half the cushions.
The other half came via a different courier.

FFS!!!!!!!

I didn't know this always on the axle for me.
I'm going to try and put a pic up so you can see what I mean. The nearest arm is blurred unfortunately, but I have put some rather wobbly lines around the notches I mentioned.
They ARE jacking points.
