bought my first landrover, trying to access the engine to service it but cant figure out how to remove the bellypan. could anyone tell me whether its riveted on or theve hidden some bolts out of view

Try doing a search mate, it's been covered loads in the past.
But to answer your question, don't touch the rivets, just undo the bolts that you can see, none should be hidden.

Hi, It happens my bellypan is removed from the car, just took a picture and indicated (yellow arrows) which screws etc. are to be removed. Good luck.

I think if you cant figure out how to remove the belly pan, you should get someone else to service your car.

NOT TRUE, these things are evil & mine had nicely seized bolts which led to skint knuckles & lots of swearing. Had modded it before for simple servicing in the hope that I'd never have to bother with it after reading about some members troubles but had to do my wishbones a while back & had no option but to remove the damn thing.
Use lots of copper grease when putting it back on & modify it so you can have an easier life when doing oil changes.

The tiled floor is looking clean as ever Willo :D

You failed to mention your oil filter hole mod ;)

When the topic opener wants to remove it to do oil changes who am I to deprive him of the pleasure of removing the undercover ??:D

I removed it as I cleaned it out after the last roadbook I did, had to be removed anyway in order to have the seal of the RH drive shaft changed, which was leaking. While at the garage they told me also the seal of the rear drive shaft was leaking and that it now was a complete kit, not a seal anymore, which cost me an arm and a leg (unless, which I tend to believe more and more, they "got" me), in fact they replaced the two seals as I said plus changed the oil of the IRD and the oil of the rear differential as well and I pad 697 € or 609 £. Is that a fair price for the job done or is it a rip off ?? (By coïncidence a member of the Flemish FL club had also the three seals of the IRD replaced plus the oil of course, as well as the rear differential oil and he paid 240 € or 210 £, quite a difference).:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Oil change ;) ;)

Sounds a little pricey for the work, but the £210 sounds cheap (I wonder did he get non LR ones fitted).. Somewhere in the middle I guess??

The rear oil seals are around £20 each for LR ones. You should be able to purchase them separately, although a complete set for the rear diff oil seals and pinion seal cost me £50 (still have to fit them ;))

I'm sure my old 1.8 had a metal cover. If so why do the later ones have plastic items? Cheapness. If the early ones are metal, would it fit straight on a later model?
LR fit a guard which is metal at the front, wiff metal side rails, un plastic mostly on the horizontal bit. The frame is metal so should be ok. If yours is all metal, then it may be that it's been modded or had the original one replaced. I think.

Hippo, you missed the two sideflaps (see entry # 5) on your picture.
Mine dun't have the same setup as yours. My plastic side bits have 3 bolts to hold them onto ma hippo. The tabs at the bottom sit against the sides of the sump guard when fitted, to stop them flapping about.

Well I mean the two rounded plastic flaps on the front outside of the bellypan, right in front of the wheels, via which (the left hand one) the exhaust of the FBH passes through ?? (On my picture in entry # 5 the kind of "ears" that lay next to the bellypan on each side):D:D:D:D

Yep. Have seen yours has ears. Not sure why they're different. Mines a Jap import. But should be the same as uk spec as far as the guard goes. 2001 v6.

Strange, mine is also a 2001 (delivered january 9th 2001, guess production date end october or november as I signed the order mid-october 2000).

Perhaps we should ask Pudding (vagrent) to put up one of his famous polls to see which design is the most popular, and when the change over occurred.
