Recently bought a series 3 with a perkins prima conversion ready to drop in...The gear box is known to have problems and the seller included a good s2 gearbox.

I have already noticed the difference with the clutch mechs and will need the s3 style for the conversion.

My question is can the bellhousings be swaped over so I can use the s2.

Secondly how easy is it to do if its possible.

Cheers in advance.

It's all to do with the suffix letter on the box. I think te key is the way the shafts rub in the front plate of the gearbox.

A series III bellhousing can be bolted to a late IIA gearbox . I ran into similar problems when trying to fit a Transit engine to a IIA gearbox. Unfortunately I don't know which suffix gearboxes are compatible. The III belhousing fitted my 1970 IIA gearbox. I've got a feeling that the earlier II and IIA gearboxes had a smaller front layshaft bearing which is mounted in the bellhousing. A II/IIA parts catalogue would probably reveal the answer. Personally I think the II and IIA gearboxes are too much of a rarity to go making a hybrid II/III box out of them . SIII gearboxes are simple and cheap to fix if you've got a bit of patience.
