Yesterday I went to see a x reg td4 in blue. It had done 131k miles. Ill be honest, I've seen some right dogs for sale but apart from a damp boot this one was pretty mint with 12 months MOT on it. Advisories were surface rust on fuel pipe and rear drivers side tyre had a slight crack in it but not a fail or something along those lines. Windows all worked, no rust, wipers worked, no fuel around the injectors. These were faults I kept finding in the others I looked at.

The owner said every land rover and range rover has the abs light on when first switched on until it reaches 5mph. Does this sound right? He was also reluctant to let me drive it. He took me and my mate out in it and it drove nicely but ill be honest I don't wanna hand over any money until I've driven it.

Now ill probably get biased opinions being on an owners forum but are freelanders as much hassle as everyone makes out. I have see some dogs but this one appears ok. I always keep on top of any work that needs doing and on older cars I like to do it myself. The car has no history so ill be giving it a full overhaul including filters, breathers oils etc.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated as I feel a bit in the dark here as I don't actually know anyone personally with freelander experiences. Only ever hear people say how unreliable they are, non of which have owned one themselves.k

Yes ABS light stays on until it reaches 5mph

Check that all of the tyres are of the same condition and brand, if you need a new tyre (and it sounds like it does) then its best to buy four but you could get away with 2 new placed on the back - do a search to learn more.

Check underneath to see if both props are there with the vcu between them - if anything is missing walk away from it - it is in 2 wd only and possibly hiding something expensive to put back as 4x4...(IRD, vcu, rear diff... problems).

Take it for a good test drive with you driving and get it up to temp and check for leaks good luck bud:)

I'm doing to ask the guy for a drive today and hopefully sort out a deal. Has the props, my mate checked that out for me as he found it missing on a couple of others I viewed.

Howardo- not been banned from any forum or from driving. I've been using forums for years now but this is a first for any of the land rover forums.

I don't think freelanders are as bad as the press and trade make out. The rule is check everything throughly before you buy and buy a tool kit when you have found the rite car ;)
There is a certain something about the freelander that keeps you smiling even when they misbehave! !

+1:)

Touch wood I've always been pretty lucky with used cars. I can do minor mechanics myself so its not a massive problem. As my mate said when we looked around. Every make and model has its problems. I've talked myself out of my worries I think and going to ring the guy up.
