I keep hearing from people from people how I haven't got a proper off roader when I tell people that I have a 3 door TD4 Freelander. My question is what improvements can be done to improve the off road ability of my car and beef it up so it looks a bit less like a hairdressers car?
Only serious answers please! And no I don't want to change the car for a defender or Disco!

aw! cummon Darrnw - thats not in the style of lz - is it?

anyway dont know wot yu is complainin about - yu aught to be in my shoes!

1) AT tyres
2) sump guard.
3) lift kit
not neccessarily in that order.

When you say stick some AT's on I have been looking on tinternet and seen modular wheel and at tyre packages for quiote Chep. Are there any modular wheels that would fit the FL? Don't know what they would look like but it would be a change from the Alloys!

yu want my own opinion? go fur cheap, but strong steels or cheap alloys - yu hit a boulder in alloys - it dont look nice:eek: and they shd be cheap. Better still - get a spare set with AT's on. Just have a look at the motors on here that peeps use for serious off-roading - yu lucky if they have an undented body panel - dont think many pimp up the wheels.;)

Or go down the g4/camel route. Thats a beefed up gaylander all right....

I agree with Mad Hat Man.

A set of AT tyres and you are away on the slippery stuff.

The underbody protection (try Celtic 4x4 for ideas) doesn't improve your off roading capability but provides much needed peace of mind. I've had Defender officonadoes in the Freebie when there's been a bick clunk or scrape and they look at me expecting the thing to fall apart - nah, just the underbodyprotection doing its thang ... It's not too radical a modification, because it's generally bolted on to replace the factory spec engine sump protector, or added on to protect the fuel tank/exhaust. Sill guards might be an idea if you are worried about dents.

Having a lift is pretty much the most radical thing on the list. A two inch lift gives you the same clearance as a showroom-spec Defender.

Persoanlly, I think the best thing to do is get out there and have fun. Don't let anyone tell you the Freelander isn't capable off road - it is suprisingly capable. What you do need to get a grip on at an early stage is its limitations. Often, off road problems can be dealth with a little parrallel thinking. Otherwise, know what your approach and departure angles are, because often you can't reverse out of what you have driven into, especially with the lack of low ratio to give you more control when reversing up an incline.

To illustrate the capability of the Freebie, I went to a play day last year to try out the winch, which I had never had an oppurtunity to use and didn't want to use for the first time in anger.

It was a site I know well, and have visited before but always stayed clear of anything that I wasn't reasonably sure the Freebie could get me out the other end of. It was very strange, actually going into sections that I wasn't expecting to get out of under my own steam ... and two of the four obstacles, the Freelander just ate up and spat out ... and to think that I had always steered clear of them before!

Came home very muddy, quite tired but full of respect for a very plucky vehicle.

Cheers

Blippie....

Due to work commitments overseas, Celtic 4x4 will no longer be producing products on a regular basis. There will however be occasional runs of certain items should the demand dictate. For more information of when these runs will take place please watch the MAD Freelanders Forum at

Thanks Big G

why worry about what people think ? get some stick on site sometimes about my choice of vehicle (freelander td4 commercial), mainly from the guys who drive defenders. sure their 4x4 can go a bit more extreme than my freelander, but generally where they go work wise, I go.

Only difference, after 100 miles or so on the motorway, I don't feel like I've done a days work before I've even got there.

The Fl does its job pretty well, does what it is asked to do

Its understated!

What about this Tomb Raider FL?
Upgrade the rear drums to Callaway discs?

I particularly like the snap of the Police FL, reminds me of a few years back when the local Police closed Church Rd, Craigantlet due to snow drifts. Full blue flashing lights and POLICE ROAD CLOSED sign, in pitch darkness.

Too good to resist, I bombed down and bombed up again, twice. On the exit the police Fl was sitting at the top, theres me bombing out with huge grin on my face. I just got the WTF look, still laugh about it to this day.

The freelanders are great fun, you dont need to beef it up, stick a set of kUMHOS knobbly tyres and it will give you instant rugged look.
