Hi, before i start to unplug connections from the Becm or Gems ems I wondered if the reason my Faultmate MSV2 could not find the Becm was down to the EKA code not being acepted by the key method. if i enter the keycode the doors dont sound the alarm if opened by the key (remotre wont open anything at the moment) but if i open the bonnet the alarm sounds.

Dose this mean the key code is still not set?
Is there a way to tell if the Becm is still alive down there? :D

The red LED on the dashboard flashes even after entering the keycode but... if i open the drivers door get inside then close the drivers door behind me the red LED stops flashing for about 10 seconds then starts again. is this just the engine immobilised?

when i exit the car through the drivers door and put the key into the door lock and lock the door the indicators flash once and i can here the relays in the back doors/boot.

At the start of entering the EKA code the indicators flash as i turn the key to the left the 4 times to start the EKA procedure but after that no indicators flash through the hole EKA process. I did spray switch spray into the key hole but i dought if that got to the door latch where the micro switches are.

Any help would be good. :)

If your Faultmate cannot see the BECM I suggest that you look at the OBDII connector and the wiring behind it. Lots of probs with corrosion.
Also worth looking at the "HELP" menu on the BECM.
Reading again, it could be the micro switches in the door lock mechanism.

This may help P38 Range rover Becm Repaired & Programmed at a fraction of the cost!-P38 Range Rover Electrical Common faults and Fixes

Hi
On the auto shift lever you have a selector indication light {lights up red} if the becm is alive it will when activated glow for a few seconds easy at night cover in daylight as only very dim{could be activated by remote fob alarm on key in ignition etc} this will tell you only its not dead could be alive but not working as it should. Also could try Key in door lock turn full lock hold in lock and press and hold lock on remote for aprox 5 sec then turn to unlock hold and press and hold unlock on remotefor 5 secsThen remove key and then try remote Becms will also mess around if the rf unit in the rear is picking up signals fron wifi and other stuff Please pm if you want

What exactly is the problem?Does your RR start and run normally and you are just not able to access the becm with your MSV2 or is the vehicle immobilised?

Hi the range rover wont start, dose not show the "check engine" so engine is immobilised and dose not show up on a search by thr Faultmate. ive just brought a giant battery charger like you see on the car sales forcourts so the low battery problem can be crossed off the list. tomorow im going to spray switch cleaner on the OBD2 socket and scrub with a toothbrush as i want to cross things off the list.

i have tried the key in the door and hold the lock button down...put key in position 2 disconected the battery then re conected the battery...tried key in ignition incase it had a collor ring to sense the keyfob. have to try and see if i can see the red light near the gearshift, key fob or ignition.

I dont realy want to send my Becm off as it will talk to my faultmate soon, im not too good on my feet so things move a little slow here. i am saving up for software SM035 as i hope to be able to repair other peoples Range rover problems. I am also on the look out for a old Becm to take apart to be able to read all Becm information and apply it to the Becm.

Yes it could well be a micro switch in the door latch, i found some information regarding a way to check the wireing and switches without taking the latch or wireing off the door just have to remove the door card and use a multy meter.

So is the EKA problem causing me to be unable to get the Faultmate to see the Becm... if i get the EKA to mobilise the engine i think it may well all work afterwards. :D

The "Check Engine" lamp illuminated on the instrument panel is essential for the engine to start as it confirms security "Handshake" between Becm and engine ecu, without it (other than a bulb failure), it won't go.
I have a strong suspicion that the Becm has Armed & Locked out, this will block your SM022 module from accessing it. The only way to check this is for the Becm to come out and the logic board interrogated with SM035. I doubt very much that it's a bad/dirty connection.

As Irishrover says,if the BECM has gone into lock out mode you will not be able to access with the MSV,autologic or testbook. The only way is too remove the BECM and use the Direct CPU access module form BBS to unlock the BECM and reset it.
My 95 4,6 did this to me at a petrol station on Xmas eve in 2008.I came close to applying a source of ignition to the RR!!!

you never forget the bad times with anything and for sure the Range rover p38 is one your never going to forget. :D yes its loking like the Becm has locked me out. would BBS let me have SM035 on trial for 1 hour. hehe. ill jst have to sell my kidney lung one eye etc etc.

At around £700 for the software licence and special lead, it's down to economics Doug. with what could be a once off event.
Bear in mind that the Becm will be left in an unlocked state afterwards and access will be possible using the SM 022 module.
Getting it unlocked and reset by someone is going to cost a fraction of the SM 035.
It's your cash..just think carefully if you decide to take the plunge regarding the SM 035

the becm is not showing either locked or imobilised its just not there. The air suspension has been changed to coils so is not connected to the Becm I think im sure i want to buy the SM035. I would like to use SM035 same as you but in no hurry to make my money back fast but im sure ill make some back. I have nothing better to do as im retired due to ill health. Like you i find this very interesting. ive got skills on pcb/s and enginering. i have self taught my self on the pc and internet. one good thing about the p38 is your minds never at rest. :D

I still reckon it's worth looking for corrsion on the back of the OBD connector.

Would that stop the "Check Engine" light from coming on and the engine not starting?????????
The diagnostic connector wiring consists of a permanent 12V + & - together with diagnostic lines to the ECU's.

Doug...by all means go ahead with the purchase of the SM 035, it's an excellent piece of kit.

Er no, only lack of communication with the becm as has been reported many times. Engine not starting might then just be loss of sync.

I don't think so Keith; Loss of sync would obviously cause not starting, but if faultmate is reading the other six main ECU's and cannot locate BECM it's far more likely that BECM is in stage two lock-out.:eek:

I wouldn't be spending 7-800 on licence - far more economical to get an unlocked, and prior-checked BECM replacement, such as the one I just had supplied/fitted by Irish.

Doug - have you taken to stealer or indy with Testbook or autologic - might be worth a last try to see if their diag's can "see" the BECM?

2nd stage lock out is probly what has happened as its reading the other ecu/s.
Im buying the software as i want to do a few repairs for local people and learn a lot more abou the Becm and the systems it talks to. im after a Becm to study, i got the curcuit diagrams of the Becm. Also reading every bit of information about faults causes and remedys linked to the Becm. the more i know the better ill feel.

I sit with the laptop every day/night reading through forums, calnt get the range rover to the stealers as its a none runner. Also its blown its head gasket or worse. steams out the exhausts like a train.and drinks water like a desert rat :D

im ordering the software next month so ill have time to take all connections off clean with switch spray same under the OBD2. Ive found that my digital camara takes very good close up photos of plugs and sockets so i can view them later in the warm. Wish i had a decent sized garage.

Yep your right, some of the ECU's use separate pins on the OBD connector, I was thinking in my beffudled mind that the BECM had it's own pin but it shares with the Hevac, ABS and Auto ECU's:doh:

You say you have the BECM circuit diagrams,Do you mean the actual board electronic circuit diagrams amd component layouts.?I have been trying to locate these for a quite a while with no success. If so would appreciate a copy.:D

If they are internal BECM diagrams i would be interested too, I have been looking for some time, I have 2 spare BECM's to play with and an electronics workshop:D
