so why does my warning light come on very dimly? and then very bright intermittently?

Cheers

(its brand new - so it should be good)

ok, so nothing to worry about? just as long as the battery light doesnt stay on permanently?
Why do the volts decrease as i rev the engine?
cheers

Hi guys,

Still having trouble with this damn light. It is still on very dim. Ive checked round the wiring and have found an area which looks a bit dodgy. Its infortunately right where the wire enters one of the 8 pin conector thingies. So im unsure what is best to do., The wires going into the connector are sealed in so i will have to replace the entire connector i think?
So my question is doesanyone know where i can get one of these or is there a better option? ive looked online and cant find anything.

Cheers,

Hi,

another question;

if i remove the wire between the alternator and the warning light when the engine is running should the light come on?

cheers

Hi just a quicky, i replaced my alternator the other week and it read higher on tick over than when I revved it. It was about 14.6 on tick over then it went down to about 14ish when I revved it. Not sure about removing the wire to the battery light, I would presume it would go out completly.

I would be inclined to fix the problem for future reference i.e the warning light is there for a reason, to warn you if the alternator is packing up or the battery is knacked.

A tell tale sign of the alternator packing up or the belt needing to be tensioned is the battery light coming on when the enginge is first started on tick over, then when revved it goes out. My battery light doesnt come on at all now once the engine is started.

Cheers Terra Dog

Hi,

sorry i mean that i have removed the wire temporarily, the light remained off, however i thought it should go on as there is theroretically no charge from the alternator due to the wire being removed.
Is this right? or should the light have stayed off?

cheers

ok, so the wire going from the warning light to the alternator is the `exciter` wire, but according to that the light should on if the wire is disconnected?

When i disconnect the wire the light stays off?

cheers

ok, so the wire going from the warning light to the alternator is the `exciter` wire, but gthat doesnt say if the light should be on or off if the wire is disconnected?

cheers

what would provide current to it if the wire was disconnected ?

erm... im not sure. My thinking is that the wire provides a voltage to the warning light, but if the alternator is on its last legs the warning light goes on as the voltage in the wire decreases due to a lack of voltage from the alternator?
therefore by disconnecting the wire i am essentially giving zero current and so the light should come on?

cheers

remember that the warning light is wired in series with the exciter connection, so if the wire is removed .......

it breaks the cicuit, so if the light is not coming on after engine start my alternator must be working? Is there any way to test the wire is providing a current to the light? Multimeter between wire and?

cheers

if it goes off when you start the engine - that's good, but a voltmeter across the battery to show the alt output will be a better test

if the light never comes on, even with the engine running and ignition on then suspect a dead bulb
