Vinny, If you're looking to keep your car for a few years then a Bosch Silver is a good battery. Well overpriced from Halfords though they're local, but there are guys on ebay who sell & deliver them at reasonable prices if you know your dimensions & type.

if you've got money to waste take chromeheads advice, sensible people find their nearest agricultural supplier and buy a nice big tractor type battery that'll be half the price with twice the longevity
Sounds like sound advice, I'll have a look, guess it comes down to the dimensions and the right amh?

because i was having me tea break, even spoon feeders need tea breaks
and cos i know it irritants you .....
the largest (physically and CCA) that will fit, make sure the terminal layout suits (or that you've got enough length on yer battery cables)

what's yer point ? - large HD tractor style batteries (costing much less than any of those fancy colored ones) normally last in excess of 6 to 7 years, you trying to say that expensive ones last longer than that ?

I bought an Optima Yellow top deep cycle battery.
Its bloody expesive but lasted me 7 years and that included constant complete draining of battery often (due to good old P38 alarm drain problem).
I actually had 2 Optimas (one in the back for powering my fridge).
The battery recently died, so I replaced it this time will a fullriver (chinese) only because the US Exchange rate has made the optima more expensive than it already was.
My other Optima now sits in the engine bay and the Fullriver sits in the back powering the fridge.
I fully recommend the Optima yellow top. It might be expensive but 7 years of hard work has made it worth it.

What do the Capacity Ah and CCA values mean on the batteries please? I assume the higher the better, also does the spec below sound like it will fit a P38, it's a Varta, any good? £99 + delivery.

Blummy someone has just asked a sensible question here!!! size has nothing to do with how long or good a battery is or works
You need a hi Ah rating and a long guarantee (a good tip i learnt and always do, it has saved me a lot on £££ over the years) get your guarantee, put it in a plastic bag and put it in your battery tray and then put your battery on top of it, (you will thank me for this when it all goes tits up) pull the battery out and there's your guarantee (and your now new free replacement battery!!!)

Capacity is the amount of leccy it hold, so Amps times hours. i.e. 100 Ah will run 1amp for 100 hours before it's propper flat.
CCA is cold cranking, the turning power at 0F (minus something in new money).
I did a bit of research this morning (see thread in general landy chat) and think that the Numax looks good (hope so, mine's coming tomorrow). It's a boat and leisure battery but has had some great feedback from several four-be forums and is cheap for the spec. Manbat is the UK disti and seem to be the cheapest supplier.
Oh, and they have comfy handles!

I dont think I had your prior suggestion in mind when I made my observation, so, No!
The point was to advise a person unfamiliar with agricultural suppliers who generally shops at normal Automotive outlets to purchase the best battery he can afford and not to go for the cheapest item in town.
Your excellent suggestions are entirely valid, if not lacking a little humility, that purchasing a heavy duty Tractor Battery from an agri-merchant (perhaps at maximum discount for cash, possibly with no Vat) buys a battery lasting 7 years, does normally cross the radar of the average punter.
But I will defo give it ago next time. With a guarantee like wot you say, who needs a receipt?
