I have a 1962 Series 2a with an ex Discovery 200tdi engine conversion. The original Discovery alternator was removed for the conversion and a "basic" new one fitted in it's place. The S2a is negative earth.

Which Amp Hour battery should I buy now that the original 70AH battery from it's petrol days is now coming to the end of it's life, please?
The only energy consuming extras fitted are a pair of work lights fitted to the rear of the hardtop and uprated headlamps with relays.

Thank you.

LRgest battery you can fit in the tray is the simple answer, cranking on a cold day when it don't want to start is the worst case consideration and a bigger battery will help

Always do this - larger battery will last longer too :)

Optima? Why?
Expensive for what reason.

Just get the highest CCA battery you can fit, the super duper branded ones are still
Lead acid same as the cheap ones and don't give any real benefit.

Best advice I can give is, yes, buy the biggest you can fit in the tray. Also, buy from anywhere with a good turnover of batteries who keeps their stock in a nice cool warehouse. Warm temperatures increase the rate the battery 'self-discharges' and if a battery is discharged through being stored for weeks in a warm showroom it will start sulphating, reducing it's actual capacity (amp-hours). Once a battery has sulphated that lost capacity is very difficult to restore and certainly wont restore itself in your Landy.
