Reet...Battery light on the 300tdi is coming on faintly at tickover and becomes more red as i increase revs..now i'm guessing either a dodgey alternator, a dodgey battery or the water pump is playing up.

I've driven 25 miles home and the lights are dimming/flickering as i drive along...they are fine at tickover. The temp guage is stable at the mid-point...

Too dark to test battery or check belt..Will see in the morning but i'm leaning towards alternator as it starts fine (atm) and those dimming lights as i drive..

Would this be the majority view?

You could use a jump lead from the (-) terminal on the battery to a good clean earth point on the engine and if it sorts the problem out - the battery/engine earth is the fault ;)

Ok..tested it and its overcharging the battery, so new alternator it is...bugger.

Now i cant see a guide for this but it looks quite simple...belt off, 3 bolts and alternator off...then new on..correct? Or are there gremlins ahead?

It does look easy but the bottom bolt on the alternator is a bugger to get to... When you put the belt back on make sure the ribs on the belt realign back on the pulleys otherwise its a new belt in a few miles...

I tried doing mine on my own and its a mare... You need to lift the pre tensioner and fit the belt once the new alternator is on. One tip - if you get as much of the belt on and then flick the engine over, as the pulleys turn it, should pull the belt on - well mine did... Sorry if you know this already :0) ..

Cheers Hope...did the waterpump not so long ago so the belt is newish, went on quite easy iirc, with a bar on the tensioner..

That bottom bolt, is it easier to get to from underneath or from top of engine? Asking cos i'll be doing this on the street...arse living in the middle of town centre!

TBH its a **** either way... at least if you are under it only your legs poke out and not your ass if you lean in... You can get to it either way though. Oh, use a ring spanner not a socket. Just takes a while to undo - one of those pain in the ass jobs for a relativly quick fix...

Time isn't on my side...working all xmas, off today and tomorrow and the local breakers are ****e, dont want to risk a next day delivery so 95 aint too bad, at least i have it and know unless i **** up (highly probable)..i'll be on the road by lunchtime!

no-one local with a Halfrauds trade card?

OK..all done. Reasonably straightforward job. Battery disconected. Belt off, backplate off, remove 3 connections, one of which is just a spade connection, other 2 are 10mm nuts.

Anyone thinking of doing this might want to have a soldering iron handy as the wiring for the alarm and rev counter were very brittle and broke. 2 min job to solder and tape.

There are only 2 bolts on the alternator, both 13mm, the top one is easy with a nut at the back. The bottom one is just a blind bolt, no nut. I found it easier to get at with a ring spanner from underneath but it takes a while to tighten and cramps your fingers!

Bar on the tensioner, align belts. Just clicked motor a couple of turns to see the belt sat fine. Bobs your uncle.

Took an hour.
