battery leaking!! battery light on??

driving couple of miles from home when my battery light came on, also at the same time the rev needle shot up and down then back to normal? couple of miles later i pulled up at home, popped the bonnet to find the battery leaking fluid out of the top and bubbling noise!!??:eek: what could have caused this? i have now taken the battery out and ordering a new one in the morning..just hoping it won't do the same...300tdi 96(n) any help would be much apreciated, thanks :)
 
let the battery cool down and get it checked. then connect the alternator to it (if the battery is basically OK, check the alternator).
If the alternator is ok, replace the battery.

Be careful replacing the battery coz if its the alternator, it will cook the new one :eek:.

thanks for the help ppl, fitted a new battery today (£54) started up but battery light stayed on!..turned it off then noticed a high pitch sound coming from the alternator! which i thought was strange... there was a loose wire (which im sure was already loose 5 mnth ago) and when i touched it onto a broken terminal connector the sound went away!...anyway (sorry about the long story.must be the herbal cig..ha) reconnected loose wire where i thought it would have gone, started engine which resulted in white smoke coming from the alternator!!......so, im guessin im gonna need to get a new one? lol.....what next?? is there a wiring prob? anyone else heard of this happening?
 
You've let the magic smoke out! You need to go to lucas and get a jar of it then put it back in the alternator... On a serious note. Your alternator is FECKED. Get a new one. A defender one will not fit btw.
 
nearly there...:5bnopity:....fitted new alternator (100 amp)(also new battery is ok still) only problem i'm having now is re-fitting the belt ! the pulley on the new alternator is larger than the old one ! i remember reading somewhere the sizes are 52mm and 65mm, is this going to make a difference on mine? also i,ve tried fitting the belt on...struggling a bit, obviously because of the larger pulley. or should i have changed the pulleys over (old onto the new one)?
 
:doh: belt on, battery light goes out, job done...just found out my ticking noise when driving under load is coming from exhaust manifold..2 end nuts were loose !, so back to this pulley size thing . shall i leave it as it is now? or **** about all day tomorrow taking it all f**k**g off again to change the pulley wheel? :your_wrong: :violent:
 
If the pulley is larger than standard then it will revolve slower than the proper one. That means your engine can rev higher :rolleyes: or it will output current at a higher revs on your injun. Bearing in mind that yo rev counter is driven directly from the alternator, then it will read low.
It will be a direct relationship to the difference in circumferences of the two pulleys.
 
A question then. why are there 2 sizes of pulley? (ref: the sizes are 52mm and 65mm)
Is this for earlier/later models or Spec level ie ES with air con & such?
 
I would have thought the bigger pulley is for a petrol engine-diesels normally have smaller pulley's as revs are lower on the whole-and need to put more juice back in battery after starting,still running at lower revs
 
After reading this i think you might be able to help me I have a 1992 disco 200 tdi and today on driving to work. I noticed the rev counter wasn't moving off 0 and also the battery light was on? Any ideas or thoughts would be great as am a bit worried as there hasn't been anything like this before. But from what i have read the common denominator with the rev's and battery is the alternator??
 
slip ring on alternator f--ked ,bet your lights are nice and bright,would get it sorted as soon as possible before it fry's something more expensive
