i am on the verge of breathing life into my series 3 109 after replacing all the perishable engine bits i need to put a new battery on it and here lies my quandery there is a battery tray under the bonnet in front of the airfilter with all the leads but there is also one under the passenger seat i would prefer to use the one under the seat as its much bigger but why are there two the battery is under the bonnet at the mo but does not look big enough to start a watch

My battery's unner the passenger seat & looks weeny, but starts me V8.........mind you, doosul's are much higher compression, might need a bigger battery?

Dunno tho', I int a siontist!

when u say split charge i assume that would mean two 6 volt batterys and mine is a deisel so i assume the bigger a battery i can get on the better

Two batteries, one usually reserved for injun starting & t'other for ancillaries or a winch with a lecktirikery box that channels the lecktrik to the battery most in need when charging.

It is quite possible that your vehicle if originally a diesel had two six volt batteries in series for starting purposes. So be careful on connecting up the batteries using the existing lead set up as you might end up with 24V which the electics wont like :)

Split charge batteries are TWO batteries that are both charged by the alternator, BUT .... the second one can be used by radios and winches and things till it goes flat, but that will NOT flatten the battery that starts the engine - so you don't get stuck.

I think the twin 6v battery set up was on Ser IIs. Ser IIIs had one 12v under the bonnet.

I was thinking of adding a second battery under the seat, that is completely seperate to the existing battery, just to power my 4 spot lights as the alternator (only a puny 45amp) doesn't like them on for too long.

After reading this, what's stopping me connecting it in parallel to the current battery via a big HD switch so in the daytime it can be charging if i want it to be?

Also, what are the supposed problems with having a battery permanantly connected in parallel? As long as they're the save voltages i can't see a problem?
