Me again!!,

Now I have the battery drain sorted (disconnecting RF) I now have a cold start problem, the engine sounds like it wants to start but won't in the mornings (diesel) however after the day has warmed up a bit early afternoon she will fire up!!, is this a glow plug job or fuel pump maybe???..

Regards

Paul

As J the range says, cycle the glow plug light 2 or 3 times and see if that helps, if it does it could be glow plugs or the glow plug relay. Put a volt meter on one of the glow plugs and the block, it should read around 12 volts when the glow light is on. If not it could be the glow plug relay. The other possibility since you have been having battery drain is that your battery is low or shagged giving low cranking speed and low voltage to the glowplugs.

Sounds to me as though he has a couple or more plugs out.

Oh and if it does turn out to be glowplugs, don't buy cheapo pattern parts, as you will see if you do a search, others have found some of the pattern parts to be useless.

Yep and that's a fact. Got six for mine £35.00 it seems a couple have gone down. Will have to do a check.

Ok I'll let yer off THIS TIME..

If it happens again you must write out 1000 times ...."I must not use cheap-assed Glowplugs!"

One thing i have noticed about the M51 engine is that if consecutive plugs are ok it will start if alternate ones are duff it won't. Firing order 153624 if any combination of consecutive plugs are ok, Eg 153, or 624 Etc it will start. So they start if any three consecutive plugs are ok. If there is a gap Eg 1 good 5 duff 3 good 6 duff Etc they really struggle. So if anyone is stuck with a none starter you find three duff plugs and three good ones. You cannot get any quickly, put the good ones in three consecutivly firing cylinders and it should be ok.

Ok thanks for the replies, Is it sraight forward to locate and test the glowplugs?, I am a bit of a nonce when it comes to things like this.
It has had a brand new battery only a week ago. On first start after charging fully it sounds as if it wants to start, then every attempt after it seems to get steadily worse then all sorts of warnings come up (select neutral, abs fault etc etc). Would the battery drain that much that quickly?. I tried it again this afternoon and it sounds like the battery is dead (hardly tried) and then (select neutral came up and press remote) then I just get a bit of a click?????.

Thanks for the help

By the way the glow light does come on the dash
Unfortunatly having the light on the dash does not mean the plugs are glowing. 12volts at the wires to the plugs does not mean they are glowing. The only way to test them is to disconnect the wire from each plug inturn and test for continuity from terminal on top of plug to ground. If after a bit of cranking you get fault messages your battery is on it's way home. This is a classic case of failed glow plugs and weak battery. If you change the plugs you will get it to start but the battery will need replacing sooner rather than later also. Plugs are under inlet manifold on side of engine. Difficult and fiddly to get at, patience required set of
sockets and extensions, 8mm for nuts and 12mm extension socket for plugs. Best thing just buy 6 new plugs and change them and cut out all the tests. Because at least three if not more will be duff.

It is an 850 cca big mutha, I am now changing all the glowplugs, will keep you posted although I bet it's the fuel pump!!.
I have changed the leak off pipes aswell.

Yes that was it, 4 completely shagged glow plugs and the other two were nothing to write home about either.

Cheers
