Eavning. hope you all ready for a story! Went fill up with fuel earlyer, paid got back in the old girl (1986 90 2.5 n/a) and the battery was flat. Wouldn't turn it over. Got my mate in his 90 and tow rope ( no option for jump leads in petrol station fore court!) Tow was fine till the end of garage were it meeets the road. Pulled out and heard a huge banggg! The rope/strap had wrapped itself around the front brake disk and into the swivel! At this point I'm stuck have across one lane of a main road! Had cut my NEW strap in 3 places get it free-ed. Next I had to coast down the hill without steering or brakes nearly had few cars along the way. Stopped at bottom of hill out way and got a new battery off a mate. Then the fun of removing racing seats to get to the battery box and doing it all at side of road In the rain it was great!

Anyway, story time over, what would cause my battery to suddenly die? Alternator works fine. Earths are fine, the battery is only 2 years old? Hmmm any ideas or just a dud battery? Have now just got a new battery don't want that going flat on me or not charging! Taa

Charge the battery up over night and let it settle the gases for 30 mins. then put a drop tester on the battery and see if any cells bubble if you can see them it should hold for 9 seconds without dropping.

You may have a weak battery or one with low amps for your application, ie extra lights, electric winch etc.

You sure its the battery? Mines has a brand new battery and has a habit of not starting again. It's just a sticking solenoid, couple of taps to the solenoid or a wire straight from the battery positive to the starter motor positive always seems to do the job

Id go for a loose wire on the battery terminal. Then when you replaced the battery you fixed the problem without realising

No loose wire or anything. Battery is just fecked. Won't charge at all so must been the cells inside? Wasn't man enough for a landy to start with anyway!

I need to ask, how did you manage to get the strap round the disc?

While towing you must by using light braking, always ensure the rope is taught, this saves force on both vehicles and makes for a smoother operation.

How well did the battery start the vehicle when you went out?

My battery did the same this morning. Yesterday, it seemed fine. This morning, dead as mutton. Come to think of it, yeaterdays start might have been a fraction longer than normal.

I got it started with a boost starter which worked fine and have the battery charging for the night.

Either the battery has suddenly decided that it is toast, or I have some sort of sudden power drain going on.

Do batteries really go tits up over night?

The modern gel type certainly do. The old fashioned liquid acid ones rarely do.
