    Hi all,

Am a little stuck with an electrical issue - can't find any similar issues online thus far!

Using my 03 L322 daily, I rarely have any issues. However, after leaving the vehicle unused for over a week, the battery drains and needs a jump.

The battery is almost new so would be surprised if it is that - so I took it to be checked at a local garage. He put his computer over the battery - results as follows:

Battery test: Voltage 12.03v and in good condition

Alternator test: Ripple too big, regular volt 14.04V.

The mechanic said it was an alternator drain, something to do with the diodes...anyone seen this before and if so is in an alternator change??

    TVM, CB

Diode pack failure is not uncommon. You can DIY replace the diode pack and regulator if you are handy. Otherwise it's a new alternator.

I think mine had that issue before I bought it. I've seen the service sheets that showed an investigation into battery drain which resulted in a new batt and alternator

But I didn't have it done was the previous owners do I any give you much more info

Super, thanks. Assume it is an alternator off job to fit?

'Fraid so, it is mounted on the back of the alternator under a cover I believe!

Do the regulator and brushes at the same time, also check the bearings, then it will be good for another 100K miles.

You sure the issue couldn't be any of the other common draining issues ?

Headlight wipers , final stage resistor ?

He's had the alternator diagnosed as faulty, why confuse the issue?

Thanks for your concern, the guy who tested the battery/alternator is trusted and not after a quick buck, I saw the test result and have the computer printout!

There have been a fair few alternators causing drain/poor charging problems on here, it's a common enough problem, I used to re-furb them as a sideline.:)

They can fail on all cars. Never seen or touched one off an L322, some, stupidly, are watercooled so I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.
