In my experience a TD5 is like any other engine, if you maintain it properly it won't give you any grief. I'm on my second TD5 and wouldn't go back to anything less, it's quiet and reliable, just my opinion of course and not everyone will agree :)

I've understood that too. And with my limited knowledge I agree with you.

And I'm not afraid of electronics. :)
I love your optimism :D

electronics in 90% of other car manufacturers is just that, but clearly you've never experienced landrover electronics. its nothing but smoke, sparks and witchcraft held together with insulation and a prayer.

for example my 200tdi has pretty much no fancy electronic gimmickry, but one day the glow plug wiring combusted, completely out of the blue, for no reason whatsoever and burned through a fuel return line (I think it was), It was struggling to start and when I opened the bonnet found a melted twisted sticky smoking mess. and previously the rear interior light spontaneously combusted and tried to set the back end of my disco on fire as I was refitting the radio. first I thought the neighbour had lit his bonfire, but by the time I was struggling to breathe and realised I should probably look up, it was well and truly going for it. there was no logical reason either could try to commit hari kari in such a fashion.

and I wont bore you with all the electrical problems that became my experience of disco 3s the nightmares of which still wake me with a cold sweat in the early hours... suffice to say we had two, they were terrible.

so yeah, landrover electronics is something special. the less, the better ;)

I've not discarded the 300TDi. The 5 cylinders just sound nicer. And I'm not afraid of electronics. :)

I'm trying my best to not focus on the engine or body shape, I am hoping that I can control myself enough to buy the one that's got a good chassis, bulkhead and mechancis.

you will be afraid of electrics by the time you have finished with a TD5 my dad has all the receipts and grey hairs to prove it:lol:

stick with a nice late 300tdi so much easier to diagnose a problem also easier to do field repairs on.
