Have your boots cracked or failed?
I'd leave them until the knocking starts and just replace them.

Cant have cracked boots, MOT failure as I found out. I didn't bother just doing the boots I opted to have the joints replaced so at least I know I can face the next MOT

cornish boater, if the joints were suspect, I would change them as I did 6 weeks ago. but I made a mistake which I wish to correct.this will involve replacing the boots.

Thanks for that, looks like I will have to take the old ones off then measure the old ones and order new ones. just means the car is off the road for a while. thanks anyway

Problem solved, just ordered two more balljoints. will use the rubber boots off them.

That sounds a really daft idea. With the strip down needed to replace the boots you may aswell replace the ball joints.

I am full of daft ideas. I replaced the ball joints 4 weeks ago but made a mistake which involves removing the hub. this will damage the rubbers so in order to prevent problems ,I will replace the rubbers with new . still what do i know?

How are you going to damage the rubbers? There is no need to touch the rubbers to disassemble the hub.
