Morning all, just a quick question. Has anyone bought and used one of the ball joint splitting kits for pressfit joints from ebay, they look ok but from a photo you can never tell. I've access to oxy acetelene so heat isnt a problem. I was gonna fabricate the tool myself but for 50 quid thought it would be easier to buy one. It's for a 2003 Disco.Cheers in advance

Hi,
I just finished doing mine yesterday, I bought the kit off amazon its XXR tools 21 piece master ballpoint set think it was around £65.00, you have to modify some of the bits to get a good fit but if you got a grinder its not that difficult to adapt the bits in the kit, its not a simple job but no near as difficult as the Haynes manual suggests, just give a really thorough clean and de rust and apply plenty plus gas or similar I didn't even have to use any heat and my only joints were pretty rough, at first you think they won't go but all at once they start to move and before you know it they are out, you then have to give the receiving bores a good clean up get all surface rust gone and make sure there's no burrs in there you want it all nice and smooth, plenty of copper grease in bore and on the new joint and then press back in, making sure the joint is square in the bore as you go.
I was impressed with my tool and glad I didn't buy the £499+vat Sykes version, or pay out the £900+ that I was quoted to have them replaced, good luck with your repair just take your time and care adapting the bits in the tool kit and you'll be fine, also on U tube there's some videos by an Australian guy called Mike Murphy that cover this repair using the same or very similar kit, title is 'swearing and skinned knuckles' well worth watching before you start.

Hi Andy, thanks for the reply. It sounds like the same kit I'm looking at. I've a full workshop to play with so no probs altering things. I expect it might be a bit of a git of a job but not worried too much yet, lol. I;ve watched the youtube vid and it's gonna help no end. I'll let you know how I did.ps did you put your new joints in the freezer to shrink them slightly? Gonna fit my new steering box tomorrow so that should be fun...

Hi,
Was going to freeze them but it was cold enough out on my drive lol, good luck with it all its really not that bad, mine back in for mot on Monday, let me know how you get on.

Right then, both sets of ball joints done and finished, steering box replaced and going back for test tomorrow. The steering box was quite easy apart from having to remove the bottom radiator hose and moving the steel coolant pipework over to the nearside so the box could pass through the gap, blooming heavy lump it is though. I did my offside joints earlier in the week, I made the tool to press out the joints but kept squashing the thin wall stainless tube so needed heat to help it out. The nearside was done today, after using a heavier weight tube they both came out really easy, just remember to put some pressure on the tool then "tap" the hanger to jolt it free, makes it a lot easier than just putting lots of pressure on to force it out. Time taken for the offside joints,4.5 hours, time for nearside today after knowing where I went wrong with other side, 2.5 hours. I've a very functional tool for removing ball joints now so if anyone needs to borrow one I'm based in Brighouse, saves forking out nearly 500 quid for the Landy tool or 60 quid for one off Fleabay that might not quite work..
