am I loosing the plot?

I went to install my steering rod, when I went to tighten the ball joint nuts, the spindle (?) started spinning. I assumed the ball joint was faulty, so I just ordered another one. But it has done the same!

They spin before I get any force into the nut. I should also say it's the decent brand from paddocks, not the cheap one.

So what am I missing? Do you need to knock the ball into the housing so it takes a grip?

you need to apply force to the joint to hold it tight in the taper either a jack or a long lever as you tighten nut
