Took my disco to my usual garage this week to investigate a strange noise coming from the front end aound the 50 mph speed, noise coming from the front slightly to the right, I thought it would be A wheel bearing but the garage informed me it is the transfer box, £2140 to supply and fit a recon one, my disco is 21 years old and has been a faithful friend, toured all over the uk and europe with no effort and comfortable, ive spent a small fortune on Gav getting him all sweet as they say. But alas I'm going to have to get rid of him, I'm doing a ridiculous amount of milege up and down the m4 so ive bought a m4 muncher for the job, but gutted about Gav Just cant afford to repair or keep two cars on the rd any more
I know that noise! My D1 has been making it since I drove it home 6 years ago, the noise comes in at right on 90 kl/hr, (48 mph?), then after about 100 kl/hr (60 mph) miraculously its gone, tried quieting it with full synth gear oils, I keep expecting the box to go boom, but in all those years/klm it just keeps on humming, best way is to keep the speed 100 or above, if it ain't broke I ain't fixin it.

Howdoo Gazbo. Ive decided to keep my disco, cant bear to part with Gav, see if i can get it done

Have you tried disconnecting the prop shaft from front and rear and getting the speed up to 50mph? Diff lock might be useful too.
