Took my disco to my usual garage this week to investigate a strange noise coming from the front end aound the 50 mph speed, noise coming from the front slightly to the right, I thought it would be A wheel bearing but the garage informed me it is the transfer box, £2140 to supply and fit a recon one, my disco is 21 years old and has been a faithful friend, toured all over the uk and europe with no effort and comfortable, ive spent a small fortune on Gav getting him all sweet as they say. But alas I'm going to have to get rid of him, I'm doing a ridiculous amount of milege up and down the m4 so ive bought a m4 muncher for the job, but gutted about Gav Just cant afford to repair or keep two cars on the rd any more

thats a bit pricey id think you could get a good used one fitted elsewhere for about 500 or less, when they say its the t box what is the problem exactly are we talking a total write off or a new output bearing

Whereabouts in the country are you?

It may help to get another view.

Its a bearing noise of some sort?

Blimey thats cheap, trouble i cant fit it myself, garage wants 395 to fit a 2nd hand part

We'd need to know more information about the issue to comment properly - tell us as much as you can, and we can try and help ...... :)

The garage i tried is a 4 x 4 specialist They reckon you can buy the load bearings anymore? The bearing noise is a whirring sounds like a wheel bearing when they are on the way out, ive looked t boxs on evil bay. 125 quid, but if I get one and it goes again Ive got a guy that wants to buy mine for 800 ? But trouble is mine is solid and it doesnt leak so its its not rotten

Join a few 4x4 forums on Facebook and there is always someone breaking a D2 - you will get a t box a lot cheaper than eBay. If your D2 is solid, rot and leak free then it's worth spending a few quid on her - anything you buy within your budget is going to need money spending on it anyway - better the devil you know....
