im back owning a freelander

td4 2004

slowly going through it picking off issues

first two are, the pipe on the egr is connected at the egr. the other is swinging free

I cannot locate where its meant to plug into.

more pressing matter is the little filter back left of engine,

it has a pipe on one end, but nothing connected to other and there is no fuel, or pressure in it,
not sure what it filters or why its sat there not doing anything

Pipe - Mine fell off when I blanked my egr. There's a small manifold block almost directly under the egr on the engine, you should be able to feel the pipe the flexi goes into, it points toward the radiator (I think there's another pipe from the vacuum tank feeding it too, from the other end).

The filter is just a breather, only connected one end. Leave the other up by the expansion tank.

prev. one weren't a td4 then :-?

said small in-line filter be for the turbo vacuum solenoid vent ..
one end is open to the atmosphere ..
it's to stop grit/grime getting into the solenoid / turbo vacuum actuating system
and causing it to screw-up / stick / fail / cost u £££ to fix ..

next to the filter be a thin hooked pipe ..
that's a vent from the IRD box ..

you on about the braided vacuum hose that connects to the egr ??
if so .. then it goes .. egr to egr solenoid .. egr solenoid to main vacuum pipe that
connects to the vacuum pump ..
might have been disconnected to stop the egr from opening ..
most pppl install an egr-bypass unit

excellent, thank you for your replys,
yes there is a hooked pipe there, ill have a fish about for egr pipe connection,

im planning on fitting a bypass kit as soon as funds allow.

my first freelander was a 1.8 petrol.

next up, the vcu, I think mine has started to wear. is it worth getting a 2nd hand one, or a recon unit from bell engineering,
or just suck it up and get a new one,

How do you know? Have you tested it yet? Mine was completely knackered (seized almost solid) at 104,000 miles so if yours is much more than that it may already have been replaced.

I did the one wheel up test the day I bought it and had the propshaft off the same day. If yours is original then chances are the drive train could go bang anytime.

ive read the wheel up test, I get the jist of it,
is there a good or bad time for a set weight, then I can just do it once and determine if its shot or not,
