back door trouble now!

after finally sorted the squeak Ive had for the past two month i thought my luck was changing--not for long!! set off tonight turned off the end of the street and the rear end door swung open bending the bottom (again) and snapping the bottom hinge!
eventually got the thing closed and ordered some hinges-anyway the problem is ... i have never had any trouble with the lock/catch or handle before,none of any of the problems which are a common post on here. dont know if it was just me not shutting it right in the first place or if something has broke suddenly just wondered if this has happened to anyone else or its the dozy-hole that didn't shut the door!!!!
