Freelander 1 axle stand slipped

To day I thought I would adjust the handbrake being as it goes up seven clicks so I jacked it up place the stand underneath and started on the other side .But as soon as I started to jack the other side up the car moved side ways . On closer inspection the stand had pushed the sub frame in slightly , it is on the opposite side of the trailing arm .From what you can see do you think I have done any real damage ? sorry for the bad pics the weather is boiling and so am I , I will try and get some better pics later

Thank you I wanted to get one stand in then as I say jack the other side up and place the second one underneath so I could adjust the handbrake cable. I suppose I am lucky, that is the only mark on it underneath I am a little surprised, these things were made to go off road I wouldn't have thought that would have dinted it
 
You need a trolley jack placed central on the rear or front of the vehicle to lift it level then put the stands under on firm level ground.
If removing the wheel(s) then slacken the nuts slightly first.
 
if this is on a freelander 1 the hand brake cables are adjusted inside under the centre console but you are always better adjusting the brakes first on the drum as said if it is the freelander 1
 
I actually don't use stands for routine support of vehicles these days. I favour blocks of wood as they're better at supporting the weight without tipping over. They also spread the load over a wider area. I also don't lift one side at a time. I lift an end with my trolley jack, as it's less likely to tip off any supports used.

I am a little surprised, these things were made to go off road I wouldn't have thought that would have dinted it

The subframes are there to keep the mechanical components from touching each other. They're not designed to lift or support the vehicle, except at the central lifting point. If you apply a lot of weight over a small area, the metal tube will dent.
 
I do not have access to a trolley jack and you are right the adjusting nut is in the car but the manual says get the wheels off the ground apply the handbrake one notch and adjust the nut so they are just starting to bind hence why I wanted the wheels off the ground . Is there a way to get the dent out ? or should l leave well alone it is right next to were the trailing arm bolts on to the subframe and more importantly is it safe

**** me why would you jack it up there instead of the prober jacking up points on the sills or centre sub frames as suggested. Put the freelander back in the box and take it back to the shop will you :mad:
