I don't suppose anyone has got a new axle breather spare or at some point has tried blowing through one?

Basically...my rear axle is leaking, oil is dripping out from inside the LH rear wheel drum (its not brake fluid). SO far I have changed the hub seal (twice, just incase it was a dodgy seal) and the stub axle - same problem. Then I thought hmm, maybe it would have that effect if the axle breather was blocked? So took that off today. I have tried blowing through it (the wife says she wnt go near me now!) and it is very difficult to get air through,. Is this normal or should it be easier to get air through it? Can someone give it a go please if they have one kicking about :).

Also...on the note of axle breathers I thought whilst I was at it, if I change the axle breather, I might change to get a raised axle breather kit. I saw this on ebay which states that it will also fit series vehicles... LAND ROVER Gearbox/Axle Breather wading kit in yellow on eBay (end time 29-Oct-09 08:25:14 GMT) . But I thought the thred is different to defenders which confused me? Correct me if I am wrong! At £15 quid though its hardly worth trying to make the kit up myself.

If the above kit doesn't fit...then there is p/n 595473 which is AXLE BREATHER PIPE designed for series vehicles...but then what would I use to connect it to the axle? Or is the "Banjo Bolt" the part which screws into the axle - if it it does then that would be ideal...apart from maybe the pipe not being very long. Any help would be appreciated :)

If it is not the axle breather then I am stumped to what to try next to cure the leak!

Cheers

Alex

Thanks for that Mad Hat Man :)

I couldn't find anything Series specific for the breather kits...perhaps I am not looking very well.

My breather is deffo hard to get air through so looks like that is the culprit :) (fingers crossed)

LR Series got back to me after about 3 minutes from emailing them (quite good for a Sunday evening I think!) - that kit deffo comes with the Banjo fitting and washer. £4.47 for a genuine kit seems pretty good to me!

*edit* ordered 2 sets of axle breathers...only comes with a 1m pipe but that can easily be extended...£12.84 inc postage for 2 kits using genuine LR parts...cant really go wrong in my opinion!

Fitted the remote axle breathers the other day. Out of the packet, the front one has enough length to bring it inside the engine bay and up quite high. The rears I would say need extending...so going to get some pipe from somewhere and bring it higher up. Might bring the front up a bit higher too while I am at it.

Anyway, did a few miles driving and it still didn't fix my leaky rear wheel. I could have sworn that would have fixed the problem as the rear breather was deffo blocked. So thought hmm, bit odd that I have changed the oil seal and fittings, and the last thing done was stub axle by the garage (I know, it's a very simple job could have done it myself, but wasn't in the mood at that point). So jacked the car up in preparation to find out what else was blodey wrong, having ruled out what I thought wre all the obvious things...and the wheel was wobbling about all over the place. Whhhhhaaaaaat! The tab washers were in place, so it wasn't like it rattled loose or anything...it had just not been done up very well (had to do about 2-3 full turns to tighten. That's not very good for a garage repair is it! Perhaps the work experience boy did it. Teach me right for not doing it myself I guess.
