I took my swivels and half shafts out the front axle so i could get it painted up. Assuming the swivels are in good condition and built properly, should they just slide back in with the gasket? Nothing to do or set up on the axle?

Looking inside the axle it looks like there may be a bearing plate? Or is this part of the axle?

I cannot see anything in the parts diagrams or workshop manual here..

One small thing, you may want to swap the fasteners for OEM ones when you bolt the swivel housing back on. I'm sure they should be 10.9 tensile strength bolts and from memory the original bolts have it on the head if you can get a look at someone else's. They're not expensive although it has probably been fine for years with those bolts so it's just FYI.

If you've removed the whole swivel as one assembled unit then it should just bolt back on with a new gasket. If you're using a cheap pattern oil paper gasket it will be thinner and change the end float in the half shaft. If it's an original gasket then it'll be fine.

I've only put those bolts in there to protect the threads while I was welding, but its a good spot :)

I'll order up the original gaskets and bolts and hopefully everything will be set up good and proper!

Cheers

no it wont ,it has no effect, the shims are just about holding the cv up to the stub axle

Yeah you're right as with the circlip removed the half shaft can be pushed inwards further. From memory the half shaft butted up against something in the diff. It doesn't as I pushed in one in too far and it bound the steering up on the side.
