Had a cracking day splashing in puddles all over Dorset with Boomer today.

Driving home, turning right off the (busy) Dorchester bypass and there was a crack like it had jumped out of gear and no drive. At all. Messed around in and out of gear and hi-lo ratio but no go. There was a Disco waiting to pull out and he dragged me off the road onto a verge.

Untied and then, as if by magic, I had drive again. But then I didn't.

Rear prop is turning and I could notice a 'vibration' on the OS rear wheel. And a nasty graunching sound.

Engaged difflock and drove home.

Loads of slack and slap in the transmission. And, strangely, the brake pedal went quite a way to the floor - as if the rear brakes had gone. It pumps up and there seems to be a fair bit of vibration back through the pedal.

Just having a cuppa and going to investigate. Hoping it's the halfshaft but the brake thing, I wonder why that is...

Turns out that the the splines had worn away on the half shaft and it was turning in the drive member. Now I wonder if that was causing the brake issues as well?

Going out now for a bit more investigation in the light of day!

Thats an odd 1.maybe the shaft had some sideways play which cause the brake issue. Hope its an easy fix. Nothing worse than it breaking on the way home after a good day.

I had something similar this weekend . It turned out that a rear halfshaft has worked its way out so the splines weren't engaging. I've wedged it back in temporarily but will be getting some new bits this week once I'm paid. It's the first time I've ever seen 110 mph on the speedo, but we weren't going anywhere at the time.

Shaft and flange were buggered after a day out wiv Boomer!

Also, the bearing was completely shagged, pin bearings all over the shop, housings smashed. And the shoe springs were off. Lucky to limp home, I reckon. All fixed now wiv nice new shiny flanges.

Here's the fecked splines...
