automatic transmission off road

What are the pros (if any) and cons of having an automatic transmission off road?

I have the opportunity of getting a Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ76 Diesel really really cheap. Its in pretty good shape BUT its automatic.

far better than a standard, no clutch to fook up. But they need to be maintained, fluid and filter changes, and know when to go in low range. farm truck 300k auto trans and never a problem, another with 200k+ and no issue and have towed with them both

i think in a defender you would still select low range/high range yourself manually as you dont need the clutch to do that.

i dont know what it would be like, but i imagine in terms of not loosing traction from disconnecting the engine from the drive train every time you change gear, would be an advantage maybe?

much better with an auto offroad

stick it in low/drive for everything except down steep hills when I select first. at the bottom, back in to D.

Always in the right gear for a run at a hill as it'll change up/down as it needs too.

low ,i use high d unless its really necessary

I prefer autos myself, the only drawbacks IMO is you don't get as much engine braking when descending as you otherwise would with a gravy stirrer and if you plan on going wading, be wary you now have electrics with the auto box...

Most videos I have seen on here seldom need low range with a auto. Leave it in D no need for manual shift with them. Unless you are pulling 4-5 ton up a muddy hill
