Automatic Gear Box Oil Change ?

Hi Guys,

Hope someone can give some advice my Freelander 2 Auto SD4 (2013) has just done over 140K Miles, ive just had a full service and timing belt changed.

Runs fine no issues at all with the gear box its nice and smooth, should i get the gear box oil changed ? ive checked with a few garages and a few landrover specialists and they all basically said its up to me ? none said they recommended it which suprized me ? even the landrover specialist said they can only flush 40% out so probably not worth doing ?? (not sure if they couldnt be bothered)

I had a few quotes via who can fix my car and prices ranged from £180 - £300 ?? and thats only changing 40% off the oil.

Just wondering if its worth getting done, as would like to keep this is good running order as need it to last hopefully for a few more years.

Any advice would be welcome. Thx

Think the service schedule says 150k or 10 years so yours has not reached that. I seems a long way without even checking the level so had mine done at 100k. It was quite dirty. If it gives you peace of mind probably worth doing as it will be due soon anyway.

I think more importantly make sure its got enough in as there is no dip stick to check.

I had mine done at 82k (2008,auto) when I purchased the vehicle earlier this year. The car sales place did a full service as part of the PDI (at an extra cost) but as autobox bit isnt part of the usual service shedule it was not done.

My local garage, Lancaster. Lancs, sorted the oil, filter etc change and also the Heilex(?) unit oil etc plus checked other bits 'n' bobs as a once over.

Whilst the autobox seemed good, once it was serviced it was much better, slicker changes both up/down well worth the cost.

I was charged less than your lowest quote by about £20(ish) and as the owners hobby is renovation/servicing ex-military rovers and they are old school(ish) I am happy to use them.

Plus only 5mins walk to get home. Joy!

Carn't find spellchecker, Gods gift to poor spellers, so excuse any typo's.

At the very least, LR fluid change schedules should be halved, if you want the components to last, but hard working components like the PTU, Haldex and rear diff should be done at quarter the LR schedule.

It seems you have to repeat the process to change out more than 3lts at a time, links below.

Thx for the info looks like i need to try to find a local mechanic or someone who knows what their doing as i don't want to be charged that quote a few times over ;-0, as probably need the diff oil topped up / checked aswell.

I changed the auto box oil in my P38 by draining, filing, driving and repeat several times. Each time you get out more of the old oil until you.mostly have new oil. The oil is not that expensive and changing it as easy on the P38. Don't know about the Freelander. Some garages or specialist shops have a machine that they splice into the line going to the oil cooler. This maçhine removes all the old oil and replaces with new. That might be why you had some rather high quotes.

Thx for the reply, i wish these garages had a machine like that, but they all said they can change 40% Max, so i guess they dont have that machine you are refering to.... i will try to find a garage in the bedfordshire area who can do this properly hopefully

I don't think you should pay for more than 2 hours labour for oil and filter change plus the cost of oil. Do it once, drive a few hundred miles and then just change the oil. You will have mostly new oil.

Seasoned FL2 owners change the auto oil every 50k miles to keep the auto happy. You don't need to change all of it. The partual change is enough. Use good quality oil and make sure it's the correct oil. Using cheap oil to save a few sovs is pointless on a gearbox which will cost over £2,000 sovs to replace.
