Hi can anybody help with this,my 300dti disco auto has frightened the wife .she told me she was driving along then applied the brakes and heard a knocking noise as though there was a fight going on between drive and brake which got worse the more she put her foot down during this time[couple of secs ]she said there was no brakes she could not tell wether the engine was still revving she said the problem righted itself.I tried the disco and found nothing wrong i did move the rubbermat as i wondered if this had kept the accelerator from coming up when she took her foot off to brake i cant see this being the problem and i even tried the brakes while putting my other foot on the accelerator and this didnot stop the brakes working.Can anyone pinpoint what might be the issue as we dont fancy this happening again.

Sounds like she's never experienced ABS ?
If the Disco has ABS, find a straight empty road, get to maybe 25/30 mph and left foot on the brakes (Left foot will press it faster and harder) and keep it planted as hard as you can, does it happen again? does it stop? Try it again at same speed, this time lift off brake completely when the knocking starts.
It can 'appear' that when ABS comes in that it releases all braking, this isn't so but it does 'pulse' the brakes on and off and on some can be a horrendous noise, but if it's working correctly will stop you very quickly.
I don't have ABS on this Disco but have had it on many other cars and they all do it a bit differently, so does yours have a button/switch to turn ABS off? If so do the same as above with it turned off ......

Yes it has abs but i am not aware of any button to turn it on or off ,when i test drove it i kept trying to slam the brakes on and i never managed to get any noise nor did i feel abs was coming on.She is now wondering wether she hit some ice she knows there was water on the road but wether that was on top of ice? Shes off out now to check the road where it happened so will get an update later

Yeah, ice can really confuse ABS. I used to have a company car Renault Laguna with ABS and lived on a small hill. Icy road, tried to stop at tee junction, ABS kicked in and lost all brakes ... went right across road, stopping only when I hit the opposite kerb. Soooo lucky not to hit anyone or be hit ...
If you can't get ABS to kick in under normal braking conditions, try it, as I said earlier, with the left foot. Left legs muscle memory acts like it's pressing a clutch and will press faster and harder.

Thats right ice or going down a muddy hill with the wheels locked is bad news, the wheels have to be going round for the abs to work so if you are sliding then release and re-apply the brakes.
My abs only works on frosty roads when I do a test by jamming on the brake and never on dry or wet roads although I havent tried left foot braking.Yet..

you wont slide with abs..unless you throw it sideways into a skid.. the main rule of abs is never release the brakes once it has kicked in... the clicking noise you hear (actually more of a clunk in the disco) is the brakes being released a tiny but at just the right time to stop the wheels locking...
abs INCREASES your stopping distance but the payoff is that you have full control of the car the whole time you are stopping rather than risking a locked wheel skid which can rapidly put you in a ditch...
abs also stops working when you cover the speed sensors in mud it seems... and is very scary when it kicks in at 60mph... still at least it registers a fault at that stage and switches itself off.. when's my MOT.. I'm not bitter....
