Driving home this morning I noticed that there was no 'gate' between 3 and Drive and that there seemed no difference whereever I put the selector.I pulled over and the selector wasnt doing anything,it move,locks into its slots ,no lock between 3 and D,no reverse,no transmission lock at Park.I got home,stopped then tried to restart the engine,no can do.So I assume at least the start inhibitor switch is faulty - but why would that cause all the other probs.There is fluid in,it is clean.

HELP!Got important job to get to upcountry tonoght and no other vehicle!!
 
Can't help much, I have a manual R380 gearbox, but had a quick read of the Disco workshop manual and it could be a number of things. There's a (what looks to be) a good fault-finding system and set of road test procedures in it for setting up the autoboxes (couple of different types it seems). If you haven't got a copy, pm me your email number and I'll send you a copy, about 15mb ... ;)

others on site are giving horror stories about internal clutch,torque converter and inside valves,or blocked filters...but I dont see how ..../??

Theres fluid showing on the dipstick but since it wont go into park or neutral I cant test real level
 
Seriously though,it was a combination of linkage problems.The link pin to the shift arm on the transmission had lost its (tiny!****y,tint,tiny!!) split pin and become unattached but was sitting alongside in such a way that it looked connected...I was away from my ramps and jacks on a wet slope so access and sight was tricky.The microswitch that works the inhibitor solenoid was loose inside,within the centre console so was intermittant and there was some slack to be taken up generally.

Did the shepton mallet journey- come back sqealing - reckon another water pumps going/gone,so belt off and check for play.....anything more I can do,reckons eee??
