Well guys what a education iv had ,for one i never knew i had a diff lock ! just been outside and tried it ,it works perfectly and with ease but now for the second qeustion on this subject ,when do i actually use the diff lock ? do i presume if your stuck in mud etc ? say last januarys snow would i better in D and H as for normal driving and should i only use LOW for off road etc ? any help appreciated ,Ady

High ratio- Use this on normal road everyday driving

High ratio with diff lock- Off road use when the track is driveable but may have some mud or ruts that can be take at normal driving speeds

Low ratio- Use this when you are going down hill or when the going gets a bit tough

Low ratio with diff lock- slow off roading slippy conditions when max traction is needed

Auto box

D- For normal driving

3- This only allows the gear box to use three gears (not the 4 you have ) use this for town driving

2- As above locks the gear box to 1st and 2nd

1-Use this gear for down hill sections when max engine breaking is needed

phew

Glad i asked guys ,im now getting a clearer understanding of what im doing ! v8jay your wonderfull !!! just wish i knew somebody near me that has a discovery or defender that actually knows what there doing with it but alas i dont know anybody ,makes you wonder how many people with a 4x4 actually know how to use the gearbox ,many thanks been a great help ,ADY

I`m new to this aswell mate but 1 days laning/off roading and it will all become clear and experience will tell you what gears to use. I got stuck on my first ever laning day a couple of weeks ago and ain`t ashamed to say it but it was just down to lack of knowledge. We were doing the Bomb Hole on Strata Florida (loads of vids on it on You-tube) I went down no problem, 1st gear low range for max engine braking, feet off all pedals! But, as i started to come out of the drop my towbar was making the rear wheels hang in mid air giving me no drive. Thought i was stuck then stuck it in Diff Lock and the front wheels took over and pulled me out. After that didn`t have a problem all weekend. As i say it`s just experience, once you`ve been out playing you`ll soon get the hang of it.

most of the lanes round my way I never use diff lock as high ratio and abit of road positioning is all you need, slow and stready and dont panic,

In my army days off roading was basic training for us, but the good thing about that is that if you ever got stuck a tank was always on hand to pop you out of the mud

"always have power" I'm  . com.

If you have a wheel spinning on each axle you will be going no where diff lock or no difflock. whether the wheel is spinning or not there is still power to the wheel, true? :)

The idear of diff lock is, if a wheel has lost traction therefore disabling drive on that axle with diff lock engaged the axle that has lost dirve won't directly affect the other axle as it would if difflock was not engaged and hopfully the other axle still has traction ie. two wheel drive. what i was trying to say

answers in red.

You had road tyres as well, didn't you? I'm still amazed where you got that thing to go!

That bit in the video took me two goes to get over. 1 failed attempt, and one successful attempt after I used the difflock.

I think that was the first real obstacle of the trip that weekend!!

Rick and Paul were brave guys taking us out for our first go at laning - but it was an excellent trip :D
