Can anybody with Automatic Gearbox experiance please give help, i was driving my TD5 yr 2000 es through Dartford toll when all of a sudden the car seem to lose all momentum climbing the hill i tried to accelerate but nothing the temperature gauge went straight to red then all of a sudden the gears seem to engage and all was well again accept it seemed to take for ever to go through the gears. If i pushed throttle down it seemed to rev very hard and then settle again. i have never owned a Automatic Landy before all my others being defenders and discovery have all been manual. please help Need to get this problem fixed and not much funds to do.

Possibly the oil cooler on the way out. Watch this one the more you drive the more expensive it will get. I had the same problem with an Audi autobox. Water from the rad got into the oil cooler and into the gearbox. I limped it home. Big mistake. Stripped the gears. 2 k for a rebuild !

Now I thought that when they told me about the Audi. I could not see how water from the rad got into the Autobox. Just could not see how the 2 could possibly be linked. The explanation was that a previous owner had replaced the rad. In doing so he had failed to ensure that the oil cooler in the rad was isolated from the rad water during the repair. Rad water had got into the oil in the cooler and on into the gearbox. Still cant see it !

The temp gauge is for coolant temp in the engine, so if the gauge went through the roof it's because your engine was over-heating.

The loss of drive could have been the engine ecu telling the gearbox ecu to go into a form of "limp home" mode. In any case I would be checking the engine coolant level and the autobox oil level.

Thanks guys Just had car looked at by my local independent landrover specialist and he has confirmed head gasket gone is it worth repairing or replacing engine.
