Evening , just had the auto gearbox out of my bro-in-laws discovery and am now a bit stumped as to how you fill and check the gearbox oil ?

sorry , should have said - its a 96 model on an n reg - changed the flexi plate for him just waiting to fill it with oil !!!

Ok, it'll need Dexron IID oil or Dexron III, you fill it via the dipstick tube and the total cpacity is 9ltrs, unless you didn't empty the Torque Converter, in which case it'll only need about 5ltrs.

Right - got the correct oil . put in 5 litres to start with no luck of drive , then we were going to add more as the manuals say they hold 9.8 litres if torque converter was empty which it was as we had it off , but the oil was still sitting in the dipstick tube and wouldnt take anymore ? The problem seems to be that oil is not being pumped/sucked where it needs to be . We have had the filter out of the gearbox and nothing seems amiss , any ideas ? Any way of testing things ?

Did you start the engine and go through the "put in 1st gear, leave for 5 secs, put it into reverse and leave for 5 secs" routine?

Evening - me again , unfortunately . Still no drive , changed filter in the box , gone through all the gears etc . oil still seems to be on the dipstickas if it isnt pumping ? Took pipe off which runs to oil cooler and nothing comess out - take it it must have a pump of some description ? is it electrically operated says in haynes manual there is something which operates by power but thats as far as i understand ???????????

No electrics involved with the pump. The following has been copied from the Ashcrofts site:

" I have just fitted a reconditioned ZF autobox. I have filled the box with the correct amount of oil but have no drive at all, forward or reverse. Why?
The first thing to do is to remove the oil cooler pipe from the bottom of the gearbox (put a container under the open end to catch the oil) and start the engine. You should get a good flow of oil. If not the pump has been broken during installation and will need replacing/rebuilding. The torque convertor must be fitted to the gearbox, located correctly on the pump and locked into postion before the gearbox is offered to the engine, otherwise damage will occur to the pump, resulting in no oil flow and subsequent to other parts of the autobox".
