Recently, the lights on the auto gear selector have gone out on our N-reg 300tdi. Although I don't really know which fuse they would be running off, I did check the fuses and didn't find any popped. Are their bulbs down in there somewhere that can be replaced? How do you get at them??

Other potential electircal issues that may or may not be related:
- The cruise control hasn't worked since we bought the truck two years ago. The indicator light comes on on the switch, but the cruise doesn't work.
- The cigar lighter itself doesn't get hot, although the outlet provides enough power to run my satnav or a cell phone charger
- The clock no longer changes intensity when the headlights are turned on or off.

Thanks

il be keeping an eye ont his thread, i also need to replace the bulbs for the auto gear selector, and my cruise doesnt work either. presume these are common problems??

i havent looked at it properly but i did take the surround off the auto gear selector yesterday (to tidy the matt that goes around the centre console) and there are wires either side of the gear selector that look like they 'probably' go to some bulbs. il be looking further into this tomorrow when i have time and the shops are open to get any parts i need. if nobody has answered by then il report my fix

Selector bulbs: first unclip thr black plastic gear selector suround and you will see the two bulb holders you will need pointed nose pliers twist the bulb holder (2) and pull it out, replace the bulbs with 3watt capless, although I used 5watt which gives a brighter light without any probs with heat, replace the holders and twist with the pliers.

Cruise : check the vacuum hose for split ends in the hose where it connects to the various bits & bobs. Common prob.

Cigg lighter: the insert can be faulty.

Clock: can't help there

Hi there, to deal with your issues:

1. Lights for the autobox selector - there is a plastic frame at the base of the selector that needs to be removed, just gently prise a small blade under one side and lift away. At each side, about in the middle are small bulb holders on loose wires, lift them out, replace the bulbs and Bob is you Mum's best friend;

2. Cruise control - very common fault and usually caused by perished rubber pipes in the engine bay. On the left hand side as you look into the engine bay you will see a black bellows arrangement which operates the CC (cruise control). There will be a rubber pipe running from this, across the back of the engine bay to a white plastic 'T' piece and then continues on...... These rubber pipes often perish at their ends and allow the vacuum within them to escape. You need to cut off about 2cms of pipe and wrap with plastic tape and then refit.
This usually sorts it out;

3. Cigar lighter - if there's power going to the socket it must be that the caigar lighter itself is foobarred - buy a new one !!!

4. Clock light - have no explanation for this - I assume it's still lighting up?

Hope that helps

Cheers
Dave
