depends on how u use your disco. lots of town driving and u dont mind the fuel penalty, then get an auto.
all other types of driving then get a manual. better mpg.

as for towing, its a personal matter. some peeps prefer autos, others prefer manuals. autos can get very hot when towing large loads esp uphills. hence the oil cooler.

i much prefer a manual. but i dont drive in/out of the city twice a day either.

I can only comment on the TD5 as have driven both auto and manual versions (my own is a manual) the auto is nice to drive and I would say essential if you do a lot of city driving as the clutch on a manual feels heavy in stop start driving, its only downfall is a slight delay in transferring engine power to move the wheels, you put your foot down when pulling out of a junction but its not instant power - you get used to it though!

I have a 300tdi auto as a work truck,my wife has a 300tdi soft dash 5spd RR.The auto is such an easy drive - esp in heavy traffic, fuel consumption is worse unless on a long run.The auto goes very well too, gives nothing away to "her" car in terms of performance, for the small fuel penalty I would go the auto every time - inc off road and definately for towing.
The r380 gearbox is a pig to use,esp now its getting cold in the mornings.

i have a 300tdi auto the fuel thing is not as bad as people say unless you are going to hammer it about i love not having to mess about with the gears when in traffic it kicks down the gears as soon as i put my foot down as mentioned there is a slight delay from a standing start but has never caused me a problem but i think i will stay with the auto its wicked

Before you go to sleep, make the tea - plenty of milk,no sugar.;)

I have the V8i auto, it is brill, always had manual cars but in the disco it is great for town driving and driving down country roads/lanes having an auto box.
my vote would be for the auto.

Just wondering what are your thoughts on auto's? Driving - day to day and towing, and also mpg!!

Well thanks for all the replies, i see now why they were all positive!!! Picked her up saturday night (first time i saw it in the light sunday morning) '95 M 300tdi auto. Absolutley hooked!!! Thought i was hooked on 90's til i drove this. I really can't belive just how nice it is, i was a porper 'i've got a 90 i'll never have a disco' but how wrong can you be!! It's aquamarine and the only bit of rust is on the back door hinge, the rest is in mint cond. 114k & full service history. And all that for £2100!! Just need to get rid of the nasty crome bull bar (looks like a chav mobile) and sort out the alloys as they are colour coded(don't look quite as bad as first thought though)
V.V.V. pleased, recommend one to anyone (until it brakes!)

love the auto for everything but is very thirsty towing and under any load lucky i have duel fuel
