Unfortunatly we seem to have a problem with the gearbox following an engine swap and suspect that we have broken something along the way as there is no drive!! :arrghh:
When we first started to tighten up the bell housing bolts a loud bang was heard. Our initial thoughts were that it was just the spigots clicking into place. The sound was (or so we think) from the bell housing area as it did seem to echo! When the engine was bolted in we started to set the distributor (old one was suspect so swapped for the original from my Rangie). This is where we discovered our first problem. The engine would not turn over and it was not a locked and engaged starter motor. The bell housing bolts were all loosened off and the engine turned over OK. Bolts retightened and all still seemed fine. Bits and bobs put back together, timing set, key turned and hey presto engine fired first time.
Whilst checking for fluid leaks the gearbox was topped up and as one should we ran the box through the gears but there was no movement of the truck! No linkage was disturbed, as far as we know!
So,bearing in mind engine swap, the bang from somewhere in or near to the bell housing and a lack of drive does anyone have any idea's what may be wrong or any solutions?
Cheers

I can confirm what other members have mentioned. I have just changed my engine and I was warned repeatedly about holding the Torque Converter in place during the change. Im afraid its gearbox out my friend

no doubt you were told to rock the torq con back and forth to re engauge it. need to do this about 3 times if it does come out!! i find a broom handle or similar wedged in the circular inspection plate holds it firm enough for one person to handle the engine in!!:D:D:D!!

if not you know now!!

There is a 3 digit code on the plate of ZF boxes that will give the dimension from the front face of the TC housing down to the front of the TC itself - when its properly engaged in the oil pump drive. Not sure if its available on the Ashcroft Transmissions website, but thats where I got my list from ages ago - now stored in the "black book" of useful stuff.

I have a 4hp22 699 box going cheap if you want it for the pump, the pump is good but the rest of the box had some dirt floating about in it which kept blocking my govenor so I wouldnt sell it as a complete drop in unit although it did work well apart fom that.

first four were selling the autobox pump in there specials a while ago about £70,not sure how you go about fitting it,except remove the box to do it
