Auto box overheating!

says it all in the title!
started the Disco this morning in the snow and both the 'S' and 'M' lights flashed constantly, turned it off and restarted and they went out!
So it may/may not be connected but later today went on a long M/way run (constant 60-70mph) for 40 mins when at the end coming off the slip the transmission oil temp warning came on. I'm pretty sure it's telling the truth as there was a strong smell of 'hot oil' when I pulled up.
crawled home ok but it came on a couple of times more when cruising at 60mph ish so I just pulled over and let it cool.
ideas?
I'm thinking 1st thing an oil change then maybe some sort of cooler arrangement but that may be just masking the principle fault.
 
If you dont know how long the current oil has been in there, get it changed anyway, even if you do that, my guess is your sensor is "duff" as its common to fail and give spurious early warnings like your having, oh and there is already a gearbox oil cooler on your car.

Most UN-likely as the hot oil would melt the stuff pretty quickly, and in this weather, a simple motorway cruise should not cause the GB oil to heat up.

Pull the gearbox dipstick and wipe it on a cleanwhite tissue.

The oil should be a transparent RED colour. If it is significantly black-ish, or even just dirty looking, the GB might need new clutch plates or brake bands, but you would expect to have noticed it slipping if that was the case.

The other main causes of Autoboxes heating up are LOW oil level, torque converter stator slipping (one-way clutch failed), oil cooler blocked, towing huge trailers up steep hills in the tropics, lock-up TC clutch not working, and stuff like that, but in just about every case you would expect to feel it slipping.

Let us know what fixes it please.

The cooler is located at the front of the car underneath the radiator.

No dipstick to pull on a D2,

you will have to remove the fill plug (whilst its running in P) to see the colour of the oil, note you may lose some so have some new stuff to top up when needed.

All the above posts are "possible" causes, but I would suggest you would have issues long before now. If in ANY doubt, pull the sump and replace the filter and oil and go from there. any evidence of clutch pack break up will def show itself in the sump on the magnet and in the filter.

My guess is your sensor is still the culprit of the dash light tho, unless you have had a significant failure.
 
Sorry Urban Panzer but it definitely smelt hot as well as light coming on so I think it's mechanical!
and this morning a complete lack of drive so left at home whilst I struggle around in a Toyota corolla!!!!:censored:

No smell of overheating, but I have the same problem with the lights flashing but its when I go from drive to reverse or vice versa? its quite random but becoming more frequent? I first had a prob with it seeming like it was struggling with a high gear change when you put your foot down? When I asked the garage about it they said it didn't require an oil change as they don't need it until they have done 90+k miles??? Please help???

If your on about you M and S lights it could be your xyz switch search and your find loads of info on it.
