Hi all,

I'm all a bit new to these things, I fell in love with a 1960 SII with a perkins (not sure which yet) think it's the 4236, and parted with the cash without knowing much. She's in reasonable nick and was owned by the first owner for over 40 years.

The guy I brought it from has just had the gearbox rebuilt and have (afterwards) read these engines like to strip gearboxes :(

It's got loads of grunt if not much top end, but whatever speed it does it's enough for the steering and brakes when combined with my nerves :)

What I'm wondering is, as it's a box eater could I put something else in, Auto would be great, any advice really welcome.

Cheers

if you try to put an auto box in yer front axles int gonna like it as the autos are permament 4wd with a center diff lock. you can get round with by fitting a defender axle or ave heard talk of an adapter that will allow you to use the series T/box.

having sed that, there's a few folk wot got the perky lump in em and if they was box destroyer am sure we would have heard about it. you sure it wasn't just the PO just abusing the box?

40odd years from a box int bad and if it does die in 40 years time are yer gonna be worried about it?

ooops, didnt save any pages but here's one of them I read

LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum > Perkins 4.236

:)

Kaid Limited who did the rebuild for the PO said I'd be better off with a standard LR diesel and it'd probably eat overdrives (not needed for speed, just for LOWERING THE NOISE) :) hehehehehe

Could I change the overall drive? 1 st gear is almost redundant in this thing

Cheers

how do min? i've got a perkins 4.203 in a SIII with a Series 2 gearbox with an overdrive, i've not managed to destroy any of it and i've dragged it all over the palce with various heavy loads, and i'm pretty good a wreckin stuff so if it was that easy to break i would have thought i'd have managed by now!! :D

i've also got a another 4.203 installed on me garage floor next to a standard landrover 2 1/4 petrol and the perkings is considerably heavier! dont know by how much but i can move the landy engine about quite easily so i'd say it were "Bloody Heavy" and shift the perkins takes some effort so i'd say it'd have to be "Fookin Heavy"..... thats impirial units o measurement, not sure what it'd be in metrics.

i'd be inclined to swap our the bigger perkins for something weer, i like the 4.203 for towin and tratorin about in fields but its pants if you want to drive at normal road speeds and retain any sense hearing after the age of 25.

Just had it serviced, my sweet lord the difference, most of the noise was the rear diff being dry, it's ALMOST BEARABLE (shouting over the noise) the journey there was so loud, needed ear plugs, the way back serene in comparison,

and blimey, SPEEEED, I was keeping up with the traffic on a 60 road (speedo is soooo wildly out, dunno what I was doing 55 maybe, reads wrong and bouncy as hell) no smoke from it at all now, bit on the way there at full steam, bloke at the garage said the chassis is in good nick for her age and needs no work, springs look a bit shady to me but he thought they were fine and lubed her her up a bit, squeezed grease into her nipples and gave the fronts some extra air, now I just need Van Dam strength not Arnie style to turn the wheel :)

i had started to think I'd bought a pup, but shes gained my love once more, we still dont know what perky it has but I'm leaning towards the 3.9 4326

as this certainly isnt it

it looks like this

perkins 4.236 diesel engine, marine, hydraulic power on eBay, also Agricultural Vehicle Parts, Agricultural Vehicles, Commercial Vehicles, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 04-Jun-08 23:42:24 BST)

so, RR diffs or overdrive? oh and the last guy who owned it, when I went to buy it, "drove like he stole it" so maybe you are right he's the culprit in the box needing a rebuild, any one need to borrow a tarmac tug boat anytime??? :)

fastest tractor I've ever seen:D

i've got a 11a with the perkins 4203 and i've got the lot, 7.50 tyres, rr diffs & overdrive. it's a simple equation; less revs = less noise.. rr diffs are your best bet but if you do go for the overdrive option make sure you use it as a fifth gear and don't leave it in all the time or you'll have an overdrive full of swarf. It's all that torque that does it and yes I did learn the hard way!

how do you find acceleration with the RR diffs? when i've tried pulling away with me overdrive engaged (just for experementing) i thought the 4.203 was really sluggish, i decided that fitting RR diffs would probably be too much for it so just stuck with the overdrive asa fifth gear.

no prob with the acceleration, before the rr diffs with the torque of the perkins I hardly used 1st gear so now I use 1st more but top end is a lot more presentable, when I took it out after fitting em I did something that I never thought i'd do...... I OVERTOOK SOMETHING!!! The guy I was taking must have thought I was some sort of idiot because when he looked at me I was laughing and shouting hysterically. Simple things.

ah, i can only dream of overtaking! :( maybe one day though!!
