Any one know the score with checking the transmission oil in an auto box.
Haynes manual seems over complicated to me, if you have a oil level hole, why not top it up through
the same hole.
Book says there is a filler hole and a level hole, poor in filler hole until it runs out the level hole.
IRD and Diff fill in same hole as you check the level.

The level hole is on the bottom of the box. The level being set by a periscope type casting, the bottom of which is closed by the level plug. When the level is correct, no fluid will run into this periscope and out of the bottom. The fluid needs to be at the correct temperature between 35 and 45°C iirc. (I use 40°C) when checking them.
The filler is at the front of the box on to of what is effectively the sump pan. The Jatco box is kinda on its side compared to other auto gearboxs. So fill the box (engine running) until fluid comes out the level hole. Cycle through all gears and add another 250mm or so. Some of which will come out the level hole. Keep the engine running while monitoring box fluid temperature. As the box warms, more fluid will run out the level hole. Once the box is at the correct temperature, cycle the gears again and add another 100mm of fluid. Allow the excess to flow out of the level hole then refit the level plug. Job done. It's not a difficult task, there just a bit of faffing about.
You will need some way to measure temperature of the fluid. I use an infrared thermometer. You will need gearbox fluid either LR 402 or an equivalent. I use Carlube ATF-U as an equivalent at a sensible price. You'll also need a way of getting the fluid into the filler tube, so a long thin funnel is needed.
