Auto box experts please. Problems getting into top. TD5 2003.

I'm slowly getting used to my auto box thanks to some good nursing from forum and also a good deal of research into earlier threads. However one problem that will not go away is a reluctance to go into top when e.g. on a motorway run.

Yesterday did a 40 mile m/way run and I was at least fifteen miles into journey before I could persuade box to go up from 3 to 4 despite being in drive. Spent long time at 3500 revs (third gear ) at 70 mph. Tried all sorts of backing off, manual moves through box etc but simply would not hop into and lock into 4.

Eventually came down to 45/55 where gears lock in and eventually it popped into 4 and locked. Although it refused to do this first time I did this. So then dropped to 2500 rpm for 70mph and that was fine.

After that it was more willing to go into 4 ..... although not an easy move and its done the above to me each time I've been on m/way.


1. Not in sports mode.

2. oil levels fine.

3. Recent redplug oiling in ems sorted.

4. 115k miles

5. Fairy light accelerator touch tried etc etc.


So gentlemen.... what do you make of this and what do I have to do.

Oh dear. No replies. Has anybody any idea what is wrong please?

Mine does the same i drive up a long quite steep on ramp to join duel carrageway, and if im giving it some it is reluctant to lock torque.Once its gone in once its ok ive learnt to live with it and found if you let the torque lock once before giving it a bootfull you will have no probs. A little anoying but it is a landrover
