Hi All
I am new to this and this will be my first Freelander.
I purchased a 2008 Freelander that I collect on Monday, but was limited to the model I could buy, I wanted a XS but got a GS, here is the question.
Dose the GS have the same audio wiring so I can just pop the premium head in and the extra speakers as I know with other brands vehicles manufactures use the same wiring for most models, it would be nice just to buy extra speaker covers and add the extra speakers.
Also would like the Blue tooth to use my phone, I did not know the standard stereo did not have it until after I purchased it.
I did think out audio upgrade and may do this, but would be nice if the wiring is already there unconnected.
many thanks in advance

There is an interconnection between the head unit and the vehicle ecu, as the head unit is coded to the vehicle ecu. So for example, cannot just remove a head unit from another vehicle and put into another. That's why they don't have the 4 digit security code arrangement anymore.

Not sure if this can be overcome by reprogramming or not, but also not sure what other circuits/arrangements will be disturbed by changing the head unit. The key fobs are a "one shot" only programming arrangement, you cannot recode a key that has already been coded, not sure if this holds true for the head units. Also, on the freelander 1, there were other circuits routed through the head unit wiring, such as the horn earth.

Brand new units come code free, and are then coded to the ecu, which is why your LR dealer can upgrade the head unit.

might be worth a look on Freel2.com - Index

Not sure if it applies to the fl2 but on as abs the stereos are coded to the car. They can be fitted into a different car and coded to the new vehicle BUT they have to be divorced from the original car first. So buying a secondhand stereo that has just been pulled out can't be coded to another car (also applies to a lot of other components on the Saab as well).

Generally speaking you can remove an OE head unit and replace with aftermarket for a lot less money than replacing with an upgraded original.

The speakers should just be plug and play. However if the premium system uses additional speakers they may have a sub loom that isn't fitted to your GS. So you would possibly need that as well as the speakers.

took 2 seconds to find the answer with google. im not sure if this forums allows cross linking but..... try googling "freelander 2 difference between highline and premium audio" and clicking the first non sponsored answer
