Ok guys, i need all of your help here.

ive just been attaching my snorkel up to my air filter as when i bought it it didnt come fitted and i didnt have the fitting kit and its in the wrong wing blah blah... see previous threads. yawn.

anyway, ive got it all sorted now and i was told that you could test it by using an air tight bag over the end. this should starve the engine of the air its drawing in and cut the engine. now i have tried everything and i cant even get the engine to struggle for air! ive got everything tight and silicone'd. i cant feel where the air is coming from as the fan causes too much turbulance.

so... can you all do me a favour and go out to your motors and try to stangle your landy with an air tight bag over snorkel whilst its running and report back?

im hoping it will be ok letting in a little air from elsewhere as im really stuck as to where to seal next.

Try starving it directly at the manifold, or remove the fan.

He's trying to see if his snorkel is airtight so it will work if submerged in water.

What you could do, is remove the flexi pipe, seal the end with a bag, and blow into it (or use compressor if you have one) then you can listen for the leaks with the engine off.
 
could do... think i will try the manifold idea. is it possible for the engine to draw air from other places other than directly from the manifold/filter?

ive sealed the dump valve bit in the filter housing, put a big bead of silly around where it clamps together. got rubber and silly along with some thick plastic holding the flexi in place.

so am i right in thinking it should shut down once ive starved it at the snorkel end? or is there some tolerance?

I doubt it would be enough, but does your engine have a breather pipe linked to the manifold?

It will start to sound a bit sluggish, get a bit smokey, and if you can cut all the air down it will die yes.
 
havent looked for a breather... where abouts on the manifold would it be? ive got a 2.5 n/a in a 1984 90. dont think i have a breather. will try it tomorrow night if i get a chance.

as it stands, i cant get it to even sound remotely sluggish!

2.5N/A, ok I have this engine too and I know that if I put my hand over the air filter intake I can get the engine to sound sluggish.

The breather is the pipe going from the filler cap to the inlet manifold. Check its not loose at the manifold and sucking air in.

So you have taken the pipe from your filter inlet, along the wing, out the body work and up the side of the windscreen, yet if you block it, it still pulls air?

Take the pipe off your air filter inlet, and try starving it from there, if it that doesn't work you have a leak between your filter housing and manifold. Then you need to see if your manifold gasket is perhaps gubbed, although unlikly.

yer i looked this morning. ive got the breather going to the oil cap. which may i add is loose. ive got a new rubber seal but i cant seem to get the old one off. can i just pull it off? it is not loose at the manifold but i do get oil all over my engine from the cap being a lose-ish fit. im guessing it could be from here.

will check later as im skiving off work at the moment and should head back to the office!

It should really be there yes. You are going to need to get the filler cap sealed up for wading purposes anyway, so then just get the pipe on nice and tight.

In the mean time if you suspect its getting air here (I doubt it, its a small pipe and a lot of air it needs) stick your finger over it and see, my bet is it won't be there that the air is being drawn in.
