AT Tyres- advice please for 195 80 R15

Hi,

I have a freelander 1, 51 plate TD4. Before I start, superb 4x4 and ideal. Have had it for over a year and a half and apart from new callipers, a new air flow meter and and some new mountings it has been a cracking car to run.

The only thing I am struggling with is tyres. I have 195 80 r15 on their at the moment. I do a bit of offroading in the winter so it is important to have an AT tyre. It came with bridgestone duellers on it but to be honest this is not in my opinion an off road tyre. So to see what worked well I put only a pair of Federal MS351 's on the front and it made a hell of a difference. £50 fitted each, but however 10,000 miles later these are looking pretty worn, so they will have to go on the back. The question is, what next?

Can you recommend a tyre that is preferably under a £100 that will give a good amount of wear without giving on the mileage it will last for (that will also fir on r15's?).

Any thought welcome? Failing that I am considering picking up a set of r16 wheels and putting AT's on those and road tyres on the r15's as I do have a fair split of winter off road and summer on road.

Have a look at 4x4 Tyres :: The Ultimate 4x4 Tyre Website ::, it`s where I get mine from. They have a description of every tyre they sell, complete with a tread pattern photo too.
Very good prices and very quick delivery. Just get them fitted by a local tyre fitter.

First things first, ALWAYS but ALWAYS put the newer tyre on the rear wheels! There is enough on the forum to explain why, but basically it will save your transmission from being 'wound up'!

Secondly, you get what you pay for really. When I replaced the original tyres 4 years and 80,000 miles later, I paid for Scorpion ST's which is what the originals were too. Granted that the complete set of 4 cost me £450 fitted, I expect to get a lot of use from them.

They are a decent road tyre, not too noisy, but also did me proud on a muddy Salisbury Plain and recent snow laden roads.

i would have to agree with skynet. i had a set of scorpion st s fitted 18 months ago done 13k and they dont seem to have worn down by much more than 1.5mm on the fronts and less on the rear. realy good in the snow cant say about off road though .

I have a full set of Avon Ranger AT on at the mo, they replaced the Goodyears that were std fitment, there was no difference in noise/economy that i can tell, and after 15k miles they are showing pretty much no signs of wear, a bit more "aggressive" pattern than the goodyears, seem to remember they were about £75 each. I would recommend them, trouble is i only have 1 other tyre to compare them against!

Or shall i say l bought that size wheel for my TD4 as it has the dreaded 225x55-17's.

Anyway, l've put Falken AT's on and i think l've only seen the rear wheels activated once since doing so! V V V good for £50 fitted!

Just picked up my Freelander 1 it has 2x 195/80R15 on the front and 1x 195/100R15 and 1x 195/SR15 on the rear?

All are a different make and tread so thinking if fitting yokohama geolandars all round if there any good?

With that mix of tyres you might want to check the VCU. I've got Geolanders in mine, I like them.

a few are running coopers and are happy, gaylandersthough to beat there warranty. So you bought cheap and wore out in 10kound: cooper are 60k warranty

The Michelin Pilot Sport's on my BMW stick like glue, on tarmac, suppose these can stick like glue on mud

i have 215 65 16 Infinity INF200

ive had them on for a couple of months and upto now i really like them i have been into wet fields and slops when testing my 2nd hand VCU and i have had no problems with them at all and i only paid £54 per tyre plus £3 delivery

Infinity`s for me as well.

All round(see what I did there)good tyre and cheap.

Be warned Pirelli`s can explode at 180 miles an hour.

Thats why i ditched mine, just in case they explode going round corners too

Not in my car no, its too slow, but stick a v8 in it and yeah i'll have no problem

I have now ordered some 4x Geolanders. As for the VCU it had one fitted recently (probably because of the odd tyres) and a drive shaft so hopefully once I change them it should be Ok with luck.
