AT tyre choice?

Hi

I am looking for some advice on AT tyres for my 110 (235x85X16) for a proposed trip round Portugal this summer, also to be good in sand for next years trip :D. Somthing that won't make me look like a right tw@t on a muddy campsite but at the same time quite so the noise won't drive me mad on long motorway stretches.

I already have a set of greenway machos for the mud and BF goodrich (trak edge) for the road but they are well worn and need changing

Anybod got any experience of these Tyres Dunlop Grandtrek MT2 tyre size 235/85 R16 - www.iTyre.com

Any help,advice,experience's much appreciated ;)
 
I ran several sets of general grabber AT2s for ages on my 90, they are quiet, handle well in wet and dry and will easily get you across camp sites. They also seem to last a long time. Driven a TD5 disco running them and despite trying very hard (on private land cough cough :D) they didn't seem to slide at all

BFG AT - probably the cheapest tyres you can get (in the long run). We've used them almost exclusively on the Shogun and also had them on a 90 and now the 110. I've yet to find a situation they get truly stuck in (if they do then you'd probably have a set of muds for occasions like that).

The smallest mileage we've had out of any set is 70,000 miles - they last an incredibly long time. In fact I remember reading somewhere that one chap managed 250k on one set. Unofficial world record - since he'd need an adjudicator for each one of those miles.

Was originaly thinking BFG AT'S, those General Grabbers look a good tyre too.

What do BFG AT's 235x85x16 look like on the vehicle?? Not into silly F-off tyres but do think that some standard tyres on the Def are that narrow they look silly :eek:

What would 255x85x16 look like?

Depends on what you define as standard. The bottom end Defenders had the thinner wheels but I think on stuff like the XS models then they'd fit wider rims (basically the alloys were bigger).

Best bet is to go and ask a local garage / tyre fitting place. I know when I was looking for a set of mud-terrains for my Series (the ones in the photos) I asked about the BFG MTs but the narrowest that they did would fit on the Series rims but he said that if you hit something moderately hard they might pop-off. So basically if it was on anything other than a Land Rover then yes you could get away with the slightly wider tyres but given it was a Landy and the Series in particular gets a bit of a bashing off-road then they were likely to pop off.

To summarise a rather long-winded explanation - I ain't got a clue. You can probably find out what width your rims are and find a set of BFGs that fit. I know when I looked a while ago for the MTs the narrowest they did was 235 and the Series are 205 (i.e. would possibly fit but likely to pop off) but I think there are narrower ones.

Defender rims are wider as standard than Series I think as well.

Dumb realy but I never realy take any notice of tyres until I need the bloody things :doh:
 
Well it's now being contemplated more seriously but I'm thinking of a trip somewhere around either Africa or Europe in the 110 once I graduate... Need a proper break / adventure!
 
Anybody got any BF Goodrich KM2 (mud terrain) ?????

If so what are they like on the road? Have heard that they are a lot quiter than the old ones!

Rounded it down to a set of 265/75 x 16, either AT'S or KM2's but personaly prefer the KM2's.
 
have you looked at the Hankook RT03 its dead quite on the road and excellent offroad and Camskill Tyres has somme good deals on them
 
Still not sorted mi wheels and tyres out :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Was half decided on Coopers ST's or BF AT's 265/75 x16 but somebody has pointed out to me since that I might struggle on the the road with them as I have a Discovery transfer box? any thoughts?

Also is there any way of telling if the old girls had a lift?? how and by how much?? looks like it!! Can't tell off the springs as they are all rusty :cool:

your current tyres are taller than the new size your fitting so no problems there, the obvious way of telling is it will be taller than a standard1, you dont need a lift to fit those tyres though

265/75 x16 are the same size as 235/85 x16 !! that's what the geezer selling says anyway!

Would some kind soul like to measure there STANDARD 110 on a flat surface, height to underneath of front bumper & the same on the rear cross member.
