Well finally got the old girl to go properly. Over the last year 300tdi has always been a bit snail like performance wise, replaced lift pump, turned screw slightly on injection pump, cleaned sedimentor, changed fuel filter, adjusted valves, blanked egr, silicon hoses, cleaned airbox and intercooler and welded straight section to replace centre box. All of this just for minor improvement. Then yesterday welded straight section in place of filter/cat in front down pipe and the difference is unbelievable. Admittedly there is a little more noise to the exhaust note but I can live with that. Just makes it so much easier to drive and smoother too, wish I'd done this first. BTW 2m of exhaust pipe from local motor factors was only £10 so it was cheap option compared to about £100 replacing the pipes completely. :)

Sounds great and I'm very pleased that you are now getting somewhere with the Disco.

Normally I use a Defender non-cat downpipe at £21 from Paddocks and find that works really well too !!

Thanks mate, only welded the pipe in as I already had it sat there from when I did the back box, plus I was a bit worried about using that defender pipe without the flexi. The piece I cut out by the way was marked up Jan 95 so was probably well clogged.

Cheers.

I plan on doing all that you've done to yours to mine as she is sluggish aswell I would never pay them prices they want for what is a £10 piece of pipe?

Thanks for the post

Nick

If you go on ebay you can source a britpart full system for 70 quid. Thats none cat down pipe, straight through middle and better back box. Sounds good and no hassle fitting. If your buying just the middle section people will charge way too much.

I got a de-cat pipe for a tenner, and a britpart sports exhaust from paddocks for £34+vat and delivery. Its a larger bore, straight through centre section and back box. Not bad more power, but going to change the back box as it always sound like its blowing, so going to fit a aftermarket sports box

Mines the same. Sounds nice to a point then sounds a bit bodged. Im going cherry bomb mine when I get round to it.

Hello,
On my Australian compliance 1995 disco auto tdi, there is no Catalytic converter and no EGR valve. I do have the 2 mufflers though.
I carried out the fuel mods suggested in another post, and today took it on a 300km very torturous trip with many valleys and hills mostly with 100km/hr speed limits including up a mountain. I found that the mods have make a difference, the feel of the vehicle is slightly different, seems more torque at low revs but its very subjective. Trying to do 100km/hr up a steep mountain and keep up with the rest of the traffic is still just as impossible in top gear as ever, and I still have to drop to 3rd and be happy with 80km/hr at about 3000 rpm.
When my exhaust pipe SS extender arrives from the US, I will chop off the end muffler leaving the middle still in place but thats about as far as I want to risk it. Noise laws are quite strict here (same as California).
Silicone air hoses sounds interesting but I wonder how much this contributes to the air resistance compared to that of the piddly little intercooler and filter box?
Pity theres no room to fit a ram scoop to the front of the vehicle direct into a much larger filter box.
The whole air flow design is bad as the air has to wind half way around the world in small diameter high resistance pipes.
