Sorry but need to vent my frustrations!

Buying a defender is a nightmare!

There are so many that are overpriced, dodgy ringers! Seen a few now that arent what they claim to be. Many pickups converted to hardtops, rough resprays, sellers unable to give straight answers.

Its going to be worth it eventually but getting there is driving me mad.

just keep looking mate you'll get there in the end:) it took me near 12 months to find one but ended up with an R reg defender 300 for £1650 it did need a good bit of work as most lannys do :D

Ive been looking for about 3 months now, hope it doesnt take another 9:(

My budget is around 6k so hoping to find something that doesnt need too much spending on it immediately. Problem is the good uns get snapped up quick.

Not tried any of them ads yet. Been on autotrader (V hit and miss), ebay (some dodgy stuff there) and local ads.

Im after a 90 commercial in fairly standard condition. I will be doing some pay and plays / green laning but nothing extreme. Will most likey fit some AT tyres, A frame bar and guards underneath as money allows. Not fussy about engine, tdi or td5. Miles not such an issue, id rather have a tidy chassis & bodywork than low miles. Again colour not so fussy, not keen on the light blue. My preference would be dark green or white.

Cheers for looking, i have quite a team on lookout now!

6k should get you plenty of defender. You can usually find a half decent 200/300tdi 90 hard top on autotrader for 4-5k, which leaves you plenty for spares, repairs etc. My old 90 cost me 3k, only needed a cross member welding (mate did for free) and a couple of small problems with the engine.

s'pose it depends on how well any conversion has been done, was it done in a money (virtually) no object cos i loves me landy way, or was it I can make a fast buck out of some unwary punter way.
thats the whole point i'nt it?

whats wrong with a pickup converted to hardtop exactly?

Nowt wrong with it if thats what you know your buying. There was more to that particular truck than i posted. It was more the advert that was selling it tbh. Claimed it hadnt been modified and rarely used for the last 6 years. It was fairly local and a bit of asking around was done. It was a regular at a local pay and play site as a pickup, not so long ago. Certainly more recent than 6 years ago. Also the sellers attitude when i contacted him stunk.

I wasnt moaning about all converted pickups, just venting about that truck really.

That bit was my impression from the advert. It had a respray to, however the door shuts etc were the original colour.

Got this from another site from a copper.
if you (or anyone else) get stopped in a vehicle which has no tax - sorn is ok if it has tax - then both the owner and the driver are liable and DVLA WILL push for lots of money from both. If you are involved in a collision then most insurance companies will negate any liability except 3rd party

Another option, if you are fully comp and covered to drive other cars is to book it for an MOT but not actually take it.

I see where you are coming from now... I was assuming the history of the truck was known
