.....a 'How To' on a LPG conversion?

I have 2 weaknesses in my automotive enthusiasm....Range Rovers and 7'er BMWs (the E38 in particular).

After selling my previous 7'er at Christmas time, I have had a hankering for another, so I bought one...cheap!

It is a 1997 740i with the 4.4 M62 V8 (non-VANOS version - but in terms of the conversions it makes no difference) and I will be doing a LPG conversion to it. Now I know it is not a Land Rover product, but the installation principles and process is generic, it is just the set up and some elements of the wiring that are different (although not wildly), and also as the 2002-2005 L322 is basically the same car as the E38, E39 and E53 anyone considering a conversion to their L322 will spot similarities.

There are lots of places that will tell you that it is illegal to do your own conversion....it isn't

There are lots of places that will tell you that only the installer can register the vehicle....not so (although it can only be registered by a member of the UKLPG trade association - but inspections of installations can be arranged)

The installation has to be carried in accordance with the LPG Code of Practice part 11 - so I bought myself a copy (£32 from the UKLPG trade association).

(Disclaimer part) Now my proposed 'How To' will not substitute a qualified installation, nor mean if you follow it religiously that your install will be considered safe...that is why it needs to be commissioned and set up by a trained technician following the DIY installation....the 'How To' will document and illustrate what is done for the LPG installation. !! YOU MUST ALWAYS GET THE INSTALL PROFESSIONALY CHECKED BEFORE FIRST USE !!

Now by simple Yes, No or Why Bother please answer the poll above!!

Dangerous in my view Ant. Hope you have a good lawyer.

Only dangerous Tony, if is not done correctly and not in accordance with the CoP...it will then be commissioned, tested and setup by a professional.

My 'How To' will cover the installation of the components:
Tank and Multi-valve
Reducer
Injectors
Filters
Filler
Piping
SGIS ECU
Wiring

The system will then be inspected , filled, tested and setup by a professional LPG technician.

I have bought a copy of the CoP and the components will be installed in accordance with that.....

Appreciate your concerns Tony, but I am confident I can achieve this, I certainly wouldn't attempt it if I hadn't thought this through....also if when I read CoP11 it looks to much then I will not attempt, but we never move forward by standing still....it won't be done over a few days, this will be a few weeks work with everything checked and double checked before moving onto the next item...

I am also confident YOU can achieve it, what i am not so confident about is some of the tits on here following your guide and making a complete balls of it.

i second that. Judging by some of the complete and utter bodge jobs that i have seen on cars, even bodge jobs by so called 'professional' garages, it's not just giving people enough rope to hang themselves with, its giving people enough scope to detonate themselves and loved ones

True, we have met our fair share of total numpties at times on this wonder of the internet....

I will caveat my 'How To' with LARGE BOLD UNDERLINED text stating that this 'How To' is not definitive and does not take into account the readers abilities, the install must be inspected by a competent qualified UKLPG inspector/technician before use, and under no circumstance will I, Landyzone or its affiliates, members or associates be responsible in anyway if they solely rely on the 'How To' to safely install an LPG kit....

Then it is better NOT to do it Ant. Subtitle it, "How to make car bombs".

i'm all for freedom of info. shouldn't not do it because some people are numpties.

there's a load out there already

that vid is scary as ****!

I've always had one mounted in the rear of the P38 along with the Maglight and a first aid kit..

Since being up behind a car on fire of the middle lane of the M1, i have them in all my cars now

Personally i would not reccommend promoting DIY LPG installs. I'm sure you would do a fine job Ant as always but as been said already, some folks will take your guide as a prompt to do their own installation without the full knowledge & more importantly, the experience.
