hi there,

when i tell people that i what a discovery 200tdi/300tdi model to go gentle green laning and general plod about transport they all poo poo it and say get a pajero or something that comes from jap land.

They tell me they are unrealiable, with lots of gearbox, head gasket issues, cam belt issues etc......

so i thought i would ask the guys and girls who have them???

SO wot they like then peeps????

I still like the disco's but not to keen on tinkering every weekend rather be driving.:)

Cheers.

dont forget to mention the rust :D, but seriously I have 1991 200tdi not get rid of it
great car :D never fails to do what is asked of it :D

I did 10,000 miles in 10 months in my 93 disco and it never let me down once. averaged 35mpg and would easily reach 90mph on a motorway. and if I had needed to buy any parts or fix anythong the cost would have been a fraction of the cost, of fixing a rice burner only last week I drove from Hull to Stourbridge and then towed a large caravan to hartlepool and drove back to Hull in the pouring rain. It did it without misbehaving once. the following morning I drove it from Leeds to stourbridge again without any problems.

jap crap is just that, poor immitations of a 4wd. Miti****tys + Isuzu (biggest load of crap ever) snap there rear axle when used off road, top and bottom ball joints require replacement at every mot time and they are always very close to the emmissions limit, they also blow headgaskets regularly and they also burst the radiator at the same time. Isuzu's blow there turbo's for fun. The suspension is still by cart spring and a long bar and have very limited axle articulation. Tyres wear out very quickly as they are oversized as the steering angles are set up for the merkins who only drive in straight lines. Imported ones rely on complex electronics that cannot be read by English speaking computers so they then get scrapped. so having used my present 300tdi Disco every day and at least 3 times a month on challenging green lanes without to many problems incurring costs i think I can vouch for there strenghts.

OOh yes here's one for you about 4 years ago I scrapped 2 lwb series landies and sold the lot on ebay. the guy who won the auction had a series 1 diesel and didn't fancy driving all the way from Southampton to North wales in it especially as he had a 20' trailer. so he borrowed his mates shogun. which blew up on the M6 near Telford. so the next weekend he hitched the trailer to his 1950's series landy and drove up collected both chassis and as much of the rest of the landies as he could stack on the trailer, and drove back to southampton without any problems at all. Yer couldn't do that in a slitty.

don't know it just did. and I didn't hang around in it either. when I switched over to 2:1 veg oil/diesel I kept all the receipts for the 1st 2500miles and when I worked it out it came to 33.5mpg. so I figured if I drove it at 55/66 instead of 70/80, on Mways it'd come down to 35mpg. I did about 650 miles init last weekend inc 200 miles towing a 1200kg caravan in high winds and it used 100 ltrs of fuel so that works out about 22 gallons. that'd make it about 30mpg
