Aquiring a HSE - Best years ?

Hi all.

I've been thinking about getting me a 4.6 HSE, but these ain't so common here in Portugal, so I need to import knowledge

For the DSE, the most common advice is to get a post-98 one, because of the revised engine and electronics.

Is this also true for the HSE? Is there any signifcant leap year that I should aim for ?

Nathan is right, apart from the changeover from GEMS to THOR, the basic engine is still the same as are the electrics. Just because it's a later model doesn't mean that it is more reliable than a 1996.
P38's are well known..as can be seen from the forum...of suddenly producing problems despite having "Full Main Dealer service history, low mileage and one careful lady owner". What is needed is either plenty of cash to pay the stealers or a commitment to accept their weaknesses and take an interest in learning about them.

What's the easiest, sure tell, way to identify GEMS vs THOR ? In the DSE's is easy because of the aluminium vs plastic colectors on top, for example.
Some pictures would be lovely

I'm somewhat well versed in the Series mechanic, so I know my way around a few operations, and I'm always eager to learn more. I'm also aware that these are very temperamental machines

The top end is different,but the big lump..where it all happens..good or bad..is the same.
All that plastic and aluminium don't hold the liners in place for example!!
